1989 was the year when the recordcompany DRONE was founded to release music that was to become Väsen on the first album 1990. An almost accidental starting-point of a fifteen year long still ongoing journey. Twelve albums later and with an international reputation, Väsen as pioneers and early ground breakers still lead the way with their joyful and inventive music. Väsens music will make you feel strong and happy.
With annual tours in US and Japan and with a strong position back in Europe, Väsen is the cross-road where joy meets music.
And the journey goes on...
Väsen is a unique ensemble that transcends barriers and delight listeners with their music and personality.
Three/four great Swedish musicians: Olov Johansson on the nyckelharpa (a keyed fiddle unique to Sweden), Mikael Marin on viola Roger Tallroth on twelve-stringed guitar and André Ferrari on percussion. The trio's/quartet music has a telepathic intensity. Together they create more electricity on their acoustic instruments than most rock bands can generate with their amps turned all the way up to "11." More than one rock critic has proclaimed them "the best band in the world".
In 2008 Väsen was selected for the WOMEX Showcase with the duo Mike Marshall and Darol Anger.
Traditional music with a modern attitude. Tremendous individual musicians taking ensemble playing to new heights. Acoustic instruments with power and emotion. This is Väsen. Väsen is an acoustic band, which features an instrument unique to Sweden called the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) along with viola, perc. and guitar. Väsen plays heavenly music based in the rural Swedish tradition with a contemporary flavor. This is acoustic ensemble playing at its best, with sounds that can connote classical string quartets at one moment and upbeat folk/pop another.
Väsen carries its brilliant acoustic ensemble interplay to new levels with a contemporary energy and attitude that is rarely found in acoustic bands. The combination of nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) and viola is propelled by guitar and sometimes percussion, with tunes that are irresistible and unforgettable.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem, & some songs, on myspace... Poem 187 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): A SOUTH SHIELDS WALKABOUT - AUTUMN 2001
Out of the museum-and-gallery (Wiser on Cookson and the local way), Down Ocean Road with, to the right of me, Its eateries and, left, neat places to stay; Before, on either side, Marine Parks - The southern-one a most beautiful place, Teeming with moorhens, swans, grebes and mallards In a small lake at a scenic-hill’s base.
Then (holding chips from the parade’s cafe And, thus, a flock of gulls squawking above) Onto the South Pier I made my way: Seeing seaweed over rocks - like a glove - And high-and-dry sands held from transgression By growth of grass and the weaving of wood, Plus, in the dim light of a sleepy sun, Fishing boats returning to Tynemouth’s hood.
Hallo! Pleased to be here again! Please let me tell you about my song “Minstrels and Quixotes”. An idea appeared in my mind: The ancient spanish figure of the Quixote, always fighting against evil, this time with music, trying to save planet and nature! “We are minstrels, we are Quixotes, we are fighters, we defend honesty, we must save life and planet with our words and music”. I invite you to listen to this song “Juglares y Quijotes” which I composed using the strength of rock style and a “duetto” with the spanish singer José M. Guzmán. Thanks! Amparo García-Otero. Singer and songwriter. Spain.

I am going to tell you a story. It was written by Cervantes, our spanish famous writer, author of "The Quixote". It's a poem which tells about a girl, always under her mother's eye, guarded by her mother's fears. This girl claims that she must be her own guard, no matter the guards she has around. I composed a song based on this poem and included in the song are some "fragments" of spanish popular music. My intention is to evoke the image of the girl looking through the window with sorrow and listening to the street musiciens walking along. The title of the song is "COPLAS DE MARIALONSO" and it is displayed on my page. I invite you to have a listening...Amparo García-Otero. Singer and songwriter. Spain.
