WALID ITAYIM: Where I Wanna Be

My CD is out in Lebanon and is now available online at cdbaby.com. The title of the album is "Where I Wanna Be". It has 12 tracks on it which were recorded during the years 2007 and 2008. Most of the instruments were played by Munir Khauli and myself. There are several guest musicians as well. The title track "Where I Wanna Be" features Arthur Satyan on electric piano and hammond organ as well as Jeremy Chapman on Tenor Saxophone. The track "Can't Live This Way" features Ziad Rahbani on Fender Rhodes piano and Jeremy Chapman on Soprano Saxophone. The bass guitar on "Running Out Of Time" was played by Sami Shabshab. I owe the biggest debt to Munir Khauli without whom the recording of the CD would not have been possible. I would like to add that Munir played the monster guitar solo at the end of "Strangest Little Creature".

In Lebanon, the CD "Where I Wanna Be" is now officially available at CD Theque and all three branches of Virgin (Downtown, ABC and Citymall). I expect all of my friends to support and encourage me by buying a copy! :-)

Read a review of my CD at the USA based rock music site hardrockhaven.net:

http://hardrockhaven.net/online/2009/walid-itayim-where-i-want-to-be/

I was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. Ever since I heard the Beatles at age 6 I dreamt of becoming a rock star. Of course that never happened :-) My main instrument is guitar. I started playing at age 13. After learning how to play the basic chords, I started writing song after song. Many of those were not that good but some were pretty good. I didn't get a chance to play in any bands during my teens due to the fact that in those days in Lebanon I couldn't find kids my age who I could form bands with. During my college days and after I got to play in some bands. Of these, the band FORCE (1983-85) was the one which I loved being in the best (see live videos from a 1984 concert above). We recorded an album that would have been the perfect demo but unfortunately no one who matters ever got to hear it. The album was called Forced. Ziad Rahbani joined us for the recording of the album and played piano and keyboards. In the years since then, I continued to write songs and play gigs in local clubs but never managed to make a living from playing music. Ocassionally I got to record on other people's albums such as Ziad Rahbani's CD Monodose with Salma on which I played guitar on 2 tracks.

Taken at rehearsal with Ziad Rahbani's band March 2007

When Frank Zappa was on his deathbed in 1993 I composed and programmed the basic rhythm section of this tribute on a Yamaha Music Computer. The sounds I used came from a Proteus E-mu synthesizer. For some reason I never got around to finishing it. Later that computer crashed and I lost all the midi files that were on it. This week I found an old cassette of the recording and decided to finish it by adding stuff to it. I cut it up and looped a section to fit a guitar solo. Some drum rolls were added to the guitar and piano solo sections. And finally the part I am excited the most about adding to the original recording is the ending where the main melody of Frank's composition Eat That Question is quoted. I am very pleased with the way the final mix of this updated version turned out. I hope I have not done an injustice to Frank with this composition and with the guitar solo I played on it which was inspired directly by FZ's style of playing. I would appreciate comments from everyone who listens to it even if they are negative.

Hey again! Thanks for wishing me luck...maybe I will find something before too much longer. :) You're encouraging, too. Wow, "Image and Appearance" is awesome! I believe that is now one of my favorite ones. I bet your CD is flying off the shelves over there. Keep it up! TTYL, ~Tracy~

Walid! :)
How are you? Just wanted to say I really enjoyed both your guitar solo from the G Minor jam and your tribute to Frank Zappa! I think FZ would give it an A+!
Update: I didn't get the VA clinic office position, but am still looking. :P
Hope you had a great Father's Day!

Hi Walide! How destined it was to catch up to you some years later as you and I had only emailed about Alan Ross, but just came across and old email with your MySpace URL. Wow, Casio puts out a guitar? Wow, I only knew of them putting out calculators! Show's I have been out of the loop for quite a while now. Your daughter is great! See where she got it! She has a great knack for catchy lyrics and nice arrangements. She is going to go far! Have her check out Maria Taylor's "11:11" or her Lynn Teeter Flower"...has the kind of same genre as Sima's. Hey, how about I purchase a cd from you of your music, you sign it as a friend, and ship it out. I will in turn burn some Maria Taylor music for Sima to listen to....??? What ya think? Let me know and keep up the good music...I always like to support Indie type musicians or anyone that I know is a musician too! Randy
