My pops left when I was 3. My mother my brothers and I ended up on welfare. It was hard dealing with all the B.S that comes along with being at the bottom. The stigma of the less fortunate rears it's ugly face on every corner when you're wearing second hand shoes. I found a guitar in an apartment my family lived in. I'd listen to songs on the radio, find the melodies on the guitar, and play along. I had no idea what I was doing. It just made me happy.
It helped me forget the way people looked at me. It helped me forget the a-hole who spit on me at a corner store because I was trying to buy milk with food stamps. It helped me to trust in my own measure and not to be knocked by those better off than me.
Music is good for that. It can take your troubles away. It can make you feel something that no one thing can. Money, sex, drugs, frills, status, all that crap. Nothing material can compare to the power of music.
To this day I continue to escape through my music. I play and write all my own stuff. This is my story; these tales are my pain, my emotional scars. Music can give you an identity. I've forged mine through the music I write. I write about what I know, what I've been through, and the roads I've been down. Many people have been down the same roads I have; subsequently, they can relate to the music I write.
The struggles of life know no color, creed, or status. "At one time or another we had to take detours to get where we are (Roads)." Maybe you'll like my music, maybe you won't. If you can find something in my songs that you like, I'm thankful. My music isn't for everyone. It's nothing like the machine driven pop music that fills the air waves today.
