Sibling trio Sarah and her brothers Matthew and David play traditional and contemporary folk music from Northumberland, Scotland and Scandinavia, as well as a number of their own compositions. Sarah and David play fiddle backed by Matthew's jazz-influenced rhythm guitar.
They were finalists in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards in December 2003 and have performed at the Royal Festival Hall and National Theatre on London's South Bank, at various British festivals and in the north of Spain. They were Young Musicians to the Lord Mayor of Newcastle from 2003-2004 and in 2006 they released their debut album, described as "simply and unfussily beautiful...... inventive and impressionistic." (THE TALK Magazine)
They are all former members of Kathryn Tickell's Folkestra and founding members of Tyneside-based Southwind. In 2004 they were involved in an exchange with a group of musicians from Halsingland, Sweden, the following year Sarah spent two months teaching fiddle in Honduras, Central America, and Matthew spent summer 2007 on a music course in Brazil.
The musical diversity of XYZ will continue to develop with Matthew beginning the folk and traditional degree at Newcastle university, David studying music in Leeds and Sarah having returned from her year in Asturias, North Spain, where she discovered the thriving Asturian music scene. This year she is continuing her studies in Spanish at Glasgow university, focusing on her particular interest in Asturian music.
Now that the band are almost back in the same country, look out for gigs coming soon!

Cheers! However I really want to get better at it, haven't had enough practise yet. Are any of these tunes yours? If not, they're great arrangements! Yeah it was good fun last night, that outsider festival looks very good...
Hey Sarah, how's it going? The tunes are sounding great. I especially like Farewell to Chernobyl. It says in your profile story thingy that you have some of your own tunes. I'll have to hear them! How are things in Glasgow? I am very bored here in Aberdeen. This morning the grey of the sky matched the grey of the granite. I can't wait to be back in Glasgow!!
Hola Sarah (and David & Matthew) Espero que paséis una gran noche en familia y a continuación un gran día de Navidad. Saludos también a tus padres -que ya se me olvidaron los nombres...- la cabeza no me da para más ;) Besos Dolfu
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith’s the star that we glance Attending Christ’s churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.
Hello to the Joneses and thank you for the add. You were very lucky to have grown up playing music together. I'm enjoying your tracks. Come over and play with us at myspace page 'saratogapancelticsession' when you get a chance. Vonnie from 2 Bits (hammered dulcimer and piano)
