BIOGRAPHY

Zender is the solo moniker of Belgian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Thijs De Clus. ‘Sunday Kids’ is the follow up to his debut ‘Acid Avenue’ (2008), which spawned the national radio hit ‘Lux’. Again Zender will seduce you with melodic guitar tunes, influenced by folkrock and psychedelic music, which might remind you, sound wise, of both the sixties and the seventies. The songs were cut and mixed with the assistance of British producer John Parish (right-hand man to PJ Harvey, eels and the late Sparklehorse) and the album boasts vocal contributions from Ken Stringfellow of the Posies (check out the catchy single ‘Selling Candy’), Matthew Caws of Nada Surf (the potential radio smash hit ‘On our Side’) and Ilse Goovaerts, a.k.a. Neeka (‘Got No Time’). ‘Sunday Kids’ is a film made for the ears, and even though the tracks can be enjoyed separately at any time, they are also part of a multilayered, carefully textured and meticulously constructed whole. In other words: if you listen to them at one sitting they will expose a deeper and richer dimension altogether. The songs are linked thematically, are welded to one another by means of various reprises and interludes and will immerse the listener in bittersweet moods and atmospheres. ‘Sunday Kids’ is about the bumpy road that leads from childhood to adulthood and deals with musings about love and lust. It is a chronicle of resignation and the awakening of one’s consciousness. Zender has just made a ravishing and ultimately optimistic album that marries existential pain to a staunch belief in the brightness of life. Please give it a few of spins. You are going to love it.
