.."justify"> It’s no surprise that many major record labels are hovering over the independent scene like vultures looking for the best slice of the
pie. Here is where you can still find the ideas and the potential that is often missing elsewhere. You need only to glance at the charts and it’s readily
clear that even the "Kajal eye make-up image" sells well these days.
Zeraphine has also been presented with tempting offers from the music industry giants. The Berlin based band’s recording contract expired after the release
of their last and by all standards very successful album, "Blind Camera". A decision had to be made which direction to take in the future and if the band was
to sign a new contract, then should it be with a major or an independent label? The answer was simple - neither! The Quintet has decided to take a decisive
and actually a far more characteristic route. Along with their producer, Thommy Hein, they have founded their own label, "Phonyx" . It was the only way
Zeraphine could guarantee realizing 100% of their ideas and the new album, "Still" has achieved an unrestricted and distinctive quality.
- Singing Emotions -
.."justify">To quote a line from, Niemand Kann Es Sehen - "Don’t depend on thousands of empty words". In the song this line appears of course within a
specific context, nevertheless in it lies a universal statement. For singer and songwriter, Sven Friedrich an album is only completed after intensive
listening and this includes the lyrics. Naturally there’s music, which stands alone, but when there’s singing the voice is not only an instrument, it is also
a means for delivering a song’s content. Good lyrics are never merely empty words or verbal fireworks. Something which is forgotten all too often these days.
Zeraphine belongs to that exclusive circle of musicians who are respected not only for their solid compositions, but also for the lyrical content of their
songs. Similar to the last three albums "Still" is not a conceptual album in any traditional sense. Sven Friedrich’s personal observations define the lyrical
content and once again he will draw fans into a world full of thought provoking ideas. Regardless of attitude or dialect the lyrics move freely and elegantly
and looking closely it’s no accident that the title of Zeraphine’s fourth album has the same meaning in both German and English. Conveying emotions is what
counts and after all, emotions are international.
- Instrumental Conversations -
.."justify"> There’s a passage on this album that’s exemplary for Zeraphine’s fresh and intensive musical approach. After approximately 2 1/2 minutes
"Gib Mir Dein Gift" (Give Me your Poison) flows into a delightful instrumental intermezzo. The guitars, bass and drums appear to be speaking with
one another. Musical questions are posed and answered and it seems that only after the conversation has reached it’s ultimate goal that Sven Friedrich’s
voice is permitted to join in the musical dialogue. This distinct and energetic interplay between all of the instruments is one of the albums trademarks. The
five musicians jammed and recorded for fourteen days in Thommy Hein’s Berlin studios. The result is far from being one of those computer generated albums
where tracks are individually played and then pasted together to make a finished song. "Still" was created under live, realtime conditions. The musicians
were able to look each other in the eye and interact while recording. Something which you can hear and feel. "Still" is organic and if the album had been
recorded in a garage instead of at their producer’s studio, it would fulfill all the stereotype rock album clichés. The band’s decision not to go the usual
route, withdrawing to a secluded farm in Spreewald in order to theoretically work out new material for the album, was well worth it. Here too, Zeraphine has
gone in a new direction and produced a raw-edged and authentic work.
- At the Peak -
.."justify"> During the summer of 2006 Zeraphine will be moving between their roots in Gothic-Rock and the contemporary Alternative-Sounds scenes. The
single, which includes the title track, "Still" and "Inside Your Arms" as a double "A" side release will make it perfectly clear this summer in the clubs
that Zeraphine can hold their own beside the big names in the genre. By focusing on their strengths and making no compromises the band has come into their
own. The compositions, lyrics, vocals and production all come together at the heart of what makes the band unique. "Still" is not only Zeraphine’s best album
to date, it is also one of the most beautiful and convincing albums that you’ll listen to in 2006 - from any corner of the world!
.."justify"> Es ist kein Wunder, dass etliche Major Companys die Independent-Szene immer noch umschwirren wie Fliegen ein saftiges Stück Kuchen. Hier
findet man noch Ideen, hier gibt es ein Potenzial, das man andernorts oftmals vergebens sucht. Und dass sich Kajal geschminkte Augen gut verkaufen lassen,
zeigen die Charts deutlich. Auch Zeraphine sahen sich mit verlockenden Angeboten der Industrieriesen konfrontiert. Der Plattenvertrag der Berliner Band war
nach der Veröffentlichung ihres letzten und überaus erfolgreichen Albums Blind Camera ausgelaufen. Nun galt es zu entscheiden, welcher Weg für die Zukunft
eingeschlagen werden soll. Ein Vertrag mit einem neuen Label? Major oder Independent? Weder noch! Das Quintett schlug einen anderen, einen viel
konsequenteren und eigentlich auch äußerst charakteristischen Weg ein: Es gründete zusammen mit ihrem Produzenten Thommy Hein die Plattenfirma Phonyx. Nur so
konnte gewährleistet werden, dass sich alle Ideen zu einhundert Prozent verwirklichen lassen. Geld stinkt nicht? Richtig! Aber es kann selbst in größeren
Mengen nicht den Geist aufwiegen, der durch eine vollkommene künstlerische Freiheit entsteht. Zeraphine haben sich für ihre Kunst, für ihre Ideen, für ihre
Passion entschieden. Das Album Still ist der erste Zögling, der in den Genuss dieser freien Entfaltung kommt.
- Gesungene Emotionen -
.."justify"> „Verlass’ dich nicht auf tausend leere Worte“, heißt es in Niemand Kann Es Sehen. Natürlich steht dieser Satz dort in einem ganz
bestimmten Kontext. Trotzdem hat er auch eine universelle Aussage. Sänger Sven Friedrich gehört zu den Menschen, denen sich ein Album erst durch intensives
Hören ganz erschließt. Das beinhaltet auch und vor allem die lyrische Ebene. Selbstverständlich gibt es Musik, die ohne Worte auskommt. Sobald jedoch
gesungen wird, sollte die Stimme nicht nur ein Instrument, sondern auch ein Vehikel für Inhalte sein. Texte sind nicht nur Worthülsen oder verbale
Platzpatronen – das wird heutzutage viel zu oft vergessen. Wie wichtig das zuerst geschriebene und schließlich gesungene Wort sein kann, beweisen Zeraphine.
Die Formation gehört zum erlesenen Kreis der Musiker, die eben nicht nur wegen der Komposition, sondern gerade auf Grund der Inhalte geschätzt wird. Still
ist, wie die drei Vorgänger auch, kein Konzeptalbum im klassischen Sinne. Es sind erneut sehr persönliche Beobachtungen Friedrichs, die das Wesen der Lyrics
ausmachen. Seine Gedanken, seine Gefühle werden die Fans abermals hineinreißen in eine Welt voller Denkanstöße. Der Texter bewegt sich sicher und elegant
über das verbale Parkett – unabhängig von der Mundart. Es wird dem aufmerksamen Beobachter nicht entgehen, dass dieses vierte Zeraphine-Album einen Titel
trägt, der sowohl englisch als auch deutsch interpretiert werden kann, in beiden Sprachen jedoch dieselbe Bedeutung hat. Was zählt, sind die Emotionen, die
transportiert werden. Und Gefühle sind und bleiben nun einmal international.
- Instrumentale Gespräche -
.."justify"> Es gibt eine Passage auf diesem Album, die geradezu exemplarisch für ein neues, ein viel intensiveres Zusammenspiel bei Zeraphine ist:
Nach ca. zweieinhalb Minuten fließt Gib Mir Dein Gift in ein instrumentales Intermezzo der schönsten Art. Hier scheinen die beiden Gitarren, der Bass und das
Schlagzeug miteinander zu sprechen. Es werden Fragen gestellt und Antworten gegeben – nonverbal. Und erst, nachdem der Austausch beendet ist, die
instrumentale Konversation zu ihrem Ziel geführt hat, „darf“ Sven Friedrich seine Stimme erheben und ins Geschehen eingreifen. Dieses ausgeprägte und
nachdrückliche Zusammenspiel aller beteiligten Instrumente ist das Markenzeichen von Still. Ganze 14 Tage haben die fünf Musiker in den Berliner Studios von
Thommy Hein gejammt. Still ist keines dieser Alben, bei denen am Computer einzelne und separat eingespielte Spuren zu Liedern zusammengefügt wurden. Still
entstand unter echten Live-Bedingungen. Und das hört man nicht nur, man kann es regelrecht fühlen. Diese Platte hätte nur noch in einer Garage und nicht in
den Räumen des Stammproduzenten aufgenommen werden müssen, um alle Klischees eines „echten“ Rock-Albums zu erfüllen. Still ist organisch. Die fünf Berliner
standen sich gegenüber, konnten sich in die Augen sehen und aufeinander reagieren, als die 12 Tracks dieser CD aufgenommen wurden. Es hat sich mehr als
ausgezahlt, dass die Band darauf verzichtete, sich – wie sonst üblich – auf einen Bauernhof im Spreewald zurückzuziehen, um dort hauptsächlich theoretisch am
neuen Material zu arbeiten. Auch hier wurde ein neuer Weg eingeschlagen, dessen Ziel in einem rau produzierten, kantigen und authentischen Werk lag.
- überzeugende Gipfel -
.."justify"> Zeraphine bewegen sich auch im Sommer 2006 zwischen ihren Wurzeln, die im Gothic-Rock liegen, und modernen Alternative-Sounds. Die Single
mit den Songs Still und Inside Your Arms als Doppel-A-Seite zeigt, dass sich die Formation in den Clubs zwischen den ganz großen Namen des Genres behaupten
kann. Statt seelenlos zu expandieren, hat sich diese Band förmlich zusammengerottet und auf sich selbst, die eigenen Stärken konzentriert. Zeraphine befinden
sich am vorläufigen Gipfel ihrer Entwicklung. Das Songwriting, die Texte, der Gesang, die Produktion – alles trifft genau den Kern dessen, was diese Gruppe
ausmacht. Still ist nicht nur das beste Zeraphine-Album bisher, es ist auch eine der schönsten und überzeugendsten Platten, die man im Jahr 2006 zu hören
bekommen wird – von hier bis zum Rand der Welt!
Trotz einiger Wandel in meinem Musikgeschmack ist eure Musik weiterhin grandios und gern gehört bei mir. Ich freu mich schon auf das nächste Album...und dann endlich mal ein Konzert...bis dahin...
