REVIEW FROM FRENCH ONLINE POP MAG POPNEWS OF THE POOR TRACE EP
THE BITTER SPRINGS - Big Sweaty Dad
How comes the Bitter Springs are still complete strangers to most of us when they have been around since the mid 80s and they have been called "'Best kept secrets" by the British press? Maybe this band of five is not glamorous enough to hit the headlines, spending too much time polishing up the details of their stirring bittersweet songs. Even so, they do not have the exposure they deserve in France. But it is bound to change soon. The band works on a new album (their fifth) which should bring them to fame at last. "'Big Sweaty Dad" is already one of the POPnews team's favourites. It's your turn to get carried along by this whirling chorus.
the album AND AS FOR THE RHYMING SLANG CARVERY is moving in the right direction it'll have 14 tracks (at least) including one POWERLESS split into 4 parts across the album . All the usual suspects are on the album plus TRUMPET from the brilliant TERRY EDWARDS of TINDERSTICKS fame and some splendid hammond organ from GRAND DRIVE'S JULIAN WILSON we have now finished the epic DON'T WRITE A SONG ABOUT IT (BIRDMAN) with JOHNY BROWN as the THE BIRDMAN OF WORMWOOD SCRUBS plus LIFEBOAT MAN our tribute to the lifesavers around BRITAINS coast and our longest title since LAST PARTY'S ...WHEN THE FUTURE OF MAN COMES HERE ONLY TO MET BY THE LITTLE POCKETS OF RESISTANCE DOTTED ALONG THE COAST ' or something like that ' with THE LIFE AND NOT ENTIRELY UNEVENTFUL TIMES OF A McALPINE FUSILIER a song for the men who built Englands roads and canals .
it's still going to take a while but it's heading in the right direction
we are also working on an album as THE POOR PERFORMER which is me and dan from the springs with JEROME from PIANO MAGIC producing and ANGELE from KLIMA sharing vocals on 14 of my songs with some musical assistance here and there from friends it does have a title LIKE YER WOUNDS and is coming along nicely thank you more info as we go
there will be a seven inch single as PILLS BY POST with 2 tracks SINKING BOAT and KIND WORDS which is a collaboration with the American artist ALEX ABAJIAN and myself more news nearer the time
both songs are finished so we just need to sort out the details
and finally we're just about to get PORKY'S RANGE ..LAST PARTY'S debut lp available on line then that will be all the last party stuff available for download then apart from the 2 peel sessions only a thousand vinyl copies of PORKY'S were made originally .. should take about another month untill it's up on all the usual down load sites
have a great summer?...simple the poor performer

Finally, the headliners, Bitter Springs came up on the stage just before 10:30. The first words, however, didn’t come from the band. An elderly man with a striking white hat confidently took hold of the microphone and with much glamour introduced Bitter Springs. From the reaction of the audience I got the impression there was not really any need for it.
It was the first time I had seen Bitter Springs and I was not disappointed. Their songs have a strong story telling element. Simon Rivers, the singer and also song writer, delivered his lines as if he was just coming up with them moment from moment.
‘The Red Mist Descends’ and ‘Vagina Trees With Penis Leaves’ from the latest album ‘Suburban Crimes Of Every Happiness’ got a few fans even dancing. Bitter Springs played their music with a natural feel that made you comfortable as if you knew them for a long time. Aside from that they were also very entertaining to watch with Simon dancing and walking in front of the band which consisted of a drummer, guitarists, keyboardist and a violinist.
Unfortunately, as a result of the delay, Bitter Springs were forced to cut their set short and the audience were not happy with that. It took a bit of effort to persuade the venue manager to allow the band one more song.

stupid/funny story my wife and i are going to move from a small town to the city and she didn't want the folks at her job to know until she told her..and last night i was walking, singing along to moving to the city and who appeared beside me but her manager- who today asked her if she was moving to the city. thanks a bunch for messing that up!! great album, by the way.
