The Can Kickers play loud, fast old timey music with the occasional funky beat thrown in. Think what would happen if Minor Threat and the Ramones picked up banjoes and fiddles and joined a New Orleans-style second line.
The Can Kickers like to play shows for people who like to dance.
They've played over 700 shows since 2000 in basements, living rooms, bars, clubs, festivals, bomb shelters, on the back of a moving bus, on the back of a moving pickup truck, and even at a stadium once.
They've played all over the US multiple times and taken a trip or two to Ireland and the Netherlands. They also just barely survived a 7 week tour of Mexico in 2007. It's all about having a good time, so come out and see them live when you can.
The Can Kickers have played with all different sorts of bands, from folk to punk to everything in between. A few of them are The Pine Hill Haints, The Hackensaw Boys, The Mammals, The Dictators, The Lyres, The Moldy Peaches, Lucero, The Dickel Brothers, The Government Issue Orchestra, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Neptune, Monotonix, Mischief Brew, Bread and Roses, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, The Reducers, The Zydepunks, Two Gallants, Thurston Moore, The Evens, Dave Dondero, O Death, The Defibulators, Luminescent Orchestrii, Polka Madre y la Comezon, Reverend Deadeye, Man Man, and many more.
The Can Kickers have also appeared at numerous festivals, including The Dublin Fringe Festival (Ireland), True/False Film Festival (Columbia, Missouri), Grassroots and Shakori Hills Festivals (Trumansburg, NY and Silk Hope, NC) and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas (New Haven, CT).
PRESS AND REVIEWS:
"The Can Kickers really know how to turn an old-time tune into a joyful, foot-stomping, shout it out, party!" -Tommy Ramone
"The Can Kickers are about as high-energy as it gets, and by the end of their set they had drawn some listeners out of their chairs to the front of the stage....We were tapping our feet until earl-aye in the morning." -Nashville Scene
"Someday, after the bombs fall and the electrical grid topples over, when there's no juice for our stereos and well have to ransack those yellowed books of sheet music for entertainment, the Can Kickers will roam from one punk rock squat to the next, thrashing away at acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, and minimal drumkit, and well all recognize the fury and painfully-learned truth and sheer weird timelessness in these ancient songs they've been rolling out. That's the great thing about the Can Kickers, a trio playing older-than-dirt American folk tunes with the energy of a punk band." -Brian G. LaRue, New Haven Advocate
"I have to admit I'm impressed by this fiddle, washboard/drums, banjo band. At first I was like, "What the fuck?" But after a few listens, I am digging this quite a bit." -Punk Planet
"Listening to the Can Kickers is like being swung around a dusty dance hall after too many longnecks, dizzy and happy and giddy without a care about tomorrow or the headache that's sure to follow. There's no time to think when the band is playing old-time mountain music with the fervor of an Irish punk band; you just go with it." -Skyler Browning, Missoula, Montana Independent

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
I had a weird, but wonderful, dream last night, in which the Can Kickers made a cameo appearance. It reminded me how much I like the music that my subconscious was telling me so!
