   About Charlie Van Pelt

Latest news (October 3, 2008):
Bootleg Preachers is now available for your listening pleasure.

My biography, so far...
Charlie Van Pelt (otherwise known as "Chuck") has been a member of the underground drum 'n bass community since 2002, both as a producer and a reviewer. Before this time, he was making music as "Loopy Lizard" using MS Sound Recorder. However, as soon as he got wind of a freeware program called Buzz which could help him make tunes that were at least less crappy than the ones he was already making, he was sold. These days, he uses FL Studio, which he thought would help him take over the world. Needless to say, it hasn’t quite happened like that yet…

Chuck's songs tend to emphasize the fun side of drum 'n bass, giving priority to musical hooks and melodies as opposed to crushing basslines. Given his willingness to be inspired by anything, plus his love of many genres of music (including pop, rock, funk, jazz, and even country), this is to be expected. However, that's not to say that he can't stray from this template when it's called for; witness the slam dunk which was "Groovicide Bomber," a remix of Will Smith's "Party Starter" from his 2005 album Lost and Found. On the other hand, if you're looking for something a bit more emotional, a listen to "Unrequited Love" or "My Last" should testify to Chuck's versatility.

Chuck was also a prominent reviewer at dnbscene.com, reviewing tunes by artists such as Dave Akuma, Isotone, Mumblz, Alix Perez, and StumbleBum. His in-depth and honest yet humourous writing style made him one of the most respected and trusted reviewers at that site. He hasn't written a review since February of 2005; he now prefers to concentrate on his own productons.

As was said previously, Chuckster's own musical tastes run the gamut of the musical spectrum. His CD collection features artists as diverse as Sheryl Crow, Hanson, Elton John, Serena Ryder, Will Smith, Switchfoot, Susan Tedeschi, and Lee Ann Womack. Of course, since he's a big fan of drum 'n bass (duh), you'll also find artists like Cyantific, Dieselboy, Jonny L, Ed Rush & Optical, Total Science, and Polar. Some of his favourite artists right now are Boards Of Canada, James Brown, Sarah Harmer, Switchfoot, and Amon Tobin, his absolute favourite musician.

When he's not producing d 'n b, Chuck can be found taking in the local concert scene, singing at his church, or chilling out in Toronto. He can also be found at home in his bedroom pretending to have a life by doing things like writing this biography – in the third person. :-)

Since this site only allows six original songs at a time (i.e. no remixes), older ones will be deleted one by one as I upload new ones. If you'd like to hear more of my other stuff, feel free to click the following download links:

Whats poppin' Charlie Van Pelt....Mothersday just passed, and I wanted to share this video of Tupac Shakur performing "Dear Mama" with you....Though 'Pac made tons of great hits, my personal favorite of his is "Dear Mama"...2Pac's brilliant opus to his mother touched me in a way that no other rap song has. 'Pac pours his soul into the track and the lyrics resanate forever:

I've never understood April Fool's Day-- you lie to someone and then make fun of them for believeing you...

Friend: I had a car accident.
Me: Oh no, are you alright?
Friend: Ha-ha, April Fool's, you're an idiot!

Charlie Van Pelt....Whats up?....Just checkin up with you....wanted to share this important issue with you as well.....As you might or might not already know, a couple of weeks ago CNN did a segment entittled "Hip-Hop: Art or Poison?...this segment was both biased and ignorant toward Hip-Hop.....Public Enemy founder and Hip-Hop Legend Chuck D was a big part of this segement....The folks at RAPproject TV felt that Chuck's viewpoint was not fully represented during the CNN segment....So they tracked down Chuck to give them an exclusive, one on one sit-down interview on the issue.....During which the question is fliped.......Is CNN art or poison?.....Chuck gives a great, insightfull interview that is a must watch for any pop culture, hip-hop, or Public Enemy fan.....Check out the exclusive Chuck D interview today....Leave a comment to join in on the discussion, and let Chuck know how you feel about his viewpoints:

Everybody always wishes you a Happy New Year, but no one ever follows up. Wouldn't it it be nice to get a call in June "Hey, Charlie Van Pelt, its Tony from New Year's... I said it was going to be a great year and just wanted to see how it's going!"

A quick joke for Charlie Van Pelt,

I'm not a fan of manual labor. Women are always like "You're hands are so soft, what's your secret?" I don't use them!

Love,

Michael Somerville
