Influences
If you're going to lick the icing off somebody else's cake you won't be nourished and it won't do you any good. -- Emily Carr
That being said, I've been influenced by many great artists. I'm just too embarrassed to tell, because then you will know my secret and whom I am actually stealing from.
Sounds Like
Be careful that you do not write or paint anything that is not your own, that you don't know in your own soul. Emily Carr
Music is mediator between the spiritual and sensual life. Ludwig van Beethoven
I think my goal here is to create original music with some kind of deeper meaning, a good solid groove and to get a little better at it every day.
I seem to always be busy with performing live (150+ gigs per year) as well as producing records, not to mention a bit of studio work here and there. I forgot to mention raising our beautiful family - or maybe they are raising us.
I was lucky enough to win a few awards and accolades along the way...
- My song "She's So Fey" was featured in Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine
- Recipient of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award
- Winner of the Gamble Rogers Fingerstyle Guitar Competition
- Placed 'Top Five' at the 2007 International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition in Winfield Kansas
"David Gillis sings with an original voice, grounded in the best North American songwriting traditions. He's also a killer guitar player (I mean that in a good way, of course!). His CD is a treat to listen to, well recorded and featuring some great playing. Real, heartfelt music." Don Ross – CandyRat Records, Recording Artist
“Absolutely masterful examples of playing and arranging for solo acoustic fingerstyle guitar.” David Barrett – Toronto Fingerstyle Guitar Association
“He demonstrates many facets of his extraordinary talent as a guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and producer. This is especially evident in his wonderfully bittersweet melodies woven with poignant lyrical observations and inspirations...” Diane Wells – Washington Blues Society
"Breezy virtuosity as a solo guitarist”.... The material is so catchy ... and Gillis's presentation is so amiable. Robert Doerschuk – Winner of two ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for excellence in music journalism

Hey there, Here's one from left field... Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat? A while back I came across some very disturbing information, which inspired me to make this video: Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaIim3Rj7L4 Both artistic (ensure you've good enough sound to enjoy the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice. Though the source materials are somewhat aged, the fundamentals remain relevant today. I encourage all to visit the YouTube web page above to learn more (Show your support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly re-post and circulate as widely as possible. Help to raise awareness. Say have you checked out my web site (www.faberoptime.com) recently? Take care and keep in touch. Best, Faber. "Just a guy trying to make the world a better place."
