WORDS ON THE SHOWS...
8.15pm, THE SALFORD ARMS: DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON
Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of the day. I never tire of seeing this man. I never tire of his tortured, soulful voice, his hypnotic loops and his zany humour. He makes the sort of music that deserves to have chiascuro film backing. His lyrics about live sex shows and being poor in the Yorkshire market town of Otley soar over the audience with the crushing sadness of his heavily accented baritone, tempered only by him pulling rockstar poses with a ukulele and entering the audience to make percussion with peoples drinks. Somehow though, even this is disturbing in the humid, heavy atmosphere of the pub. Such is the barely controlled rage and sadness in his songs that even the silliest stage acts become aggressive, intimidating and uncomfortable. Utterly magnificent.
