The review of MICK MERCER an album BISTRIE SNI
Given that the recent Portishead album was such a half-baked attempt to cover up a lack of modern ideas people wishing for something intellectually artistic but with a warm beating heart instead of a cold, sectioned brain could opt for this, and it would a sensible choice. Although sung mainly in Russian this has life, soaring vocal uplift or downward emotive drilling, and intricate rhythmical patination, all couched in smart melodic manners. They seem to have been going for ages, having a first release in 1995, but there was a massive gap between Twilight in 1999 and this released earlier this year. Their own descriptions on myspace are accurate, their appeal lodged somewhere in the mix between Trip Hop, Shoegaze and Gothic. I don’t know about ‘novocaine for the soul’ though, as why would anyone want their soul anaesthetised?

violin noises + angelic voice. Music [Devushkin Son] - a magic mixture from light melancholy, heavy rhythms and atmospheric voices.
