Considered a true leader in modern reggae, Easy Star was conceived in New York City in the mid 1990's by founders Michael G., Eric Smith, Lem Oppenheimer and Remy Gerstein. While fostering a vibrant roots and culture scene in NY through their regular Tuesday night parties, Easy Star's released 'Easy Star Volume One', which included the talents of the legendary artists like Sugar Minott, Sister Carol, Ranking Joe, and the
Meditations. Led by four longtime friends, Easy Star wanted to incorporate elements of modern production, with live instrumentation (a rarity by that point) and old school recording techniques. Their appreciation of the classic sounds of Jamaica, along with their knowledge of the broader techniques used in American music has made for a distinct approach to their albums and a much needed fresh face to the music as a whole.
Easy Star Volume One received considerable attention in the reggae world and
set the foundation for the rest of the label's releases. By putting out full length records from artists like The Meditations, Sugar Minott, Tristan Palma and the African Brothers, plus the now legendary 'Hidden Treasures' compilations, Easy Star flew to the top of the modern reggae scene.
In 2003, they released 'Dub Side of the Moon' to critical acclaim worldwide. Longtime Easy Star producers Michael G and Victor 'Ticklah' Axelrod, reinterpreted Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon,' transforming it into deep dub and reggae grooves. A huge independent success story, DSOTM has been on the Billboard Reggae charts for over 100 weeks and has helped spur sold out performances by the Easy Star All-Stars all over the world.
Now to the present. Easy Star released 'Pressure Points' (April 2005) from John Brown's Body, regarded as the most original and best reggae band in the states. JBB's future sound and original stamp on the music comes clear in Pressure Points, and together with Easy Star they are pushing the envelope in every way.
The Easy Star All-Stars released RADIODREAD, a complete reggae version of Radiohead's OK Computer in August of 2006, featuring Toots and the Maytals, Citizen Cope, Morgan Heritage, Horace Andy, Sugar Minott, Frankie Paul, Israel Vibrations, The Meditations and more. This upcoming release, along with a DVD of the live Dub Side show and a new Dub project produced by Ticklah, are continuing Easy Star's goal to create the new classics in reggae.
