Galitcha is a visionary ensemble that performs original compositions based on Indian folk music, combined with influences from jazz, world and North American folk. This versatile band has performed at festivals, concerts, house concerts, school performances, workshops, weddings and community halls.
The band has played in unique places as the Festival au Désert in Timbouctou, Mali and Festival de Rabat and International Festival de Tetouan in Morrocco. In fact, it is Galitcha's live performance that has earned the group some of its most enthusiastic acclaim. Coleman Barkin of New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts called their show there "an evening of love," adding "Galitcha is that rare blending of superb musicianship and emotional connection ." Paul Emile Comeau of Penguin Eggs, named Galitcha one of the top 10 live acts of 2003.
Galitcha has been featured on many workshop stages and their Bangra and Bollywood dance workshop are big hits at the festivals. They have collaborated on stage with artists such as acoustic blues guitarist Harry Manx, violinist Oliver Schoer, guitarist Ellen McIllwaine and accordionist Yves Lambert (founder of La Bottine Souriante).
Galitcha has been chosen to perform official main stage showcases at industry conferences including Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Conference, Ontario Contact, NERFA (North East Regional Folk Alliance) in Monticello NY, Folk Alliance Canada, Folquébec, Pacific Contact, Folk Alliance Canada (showcase at the NA Folk Alliance conference), ArtsCan conference for educators Vancouver BC, Contact Ontarois (closing Gala with Yves Lambert and other Francophone musicians), Réseau Scènes Montreal, QC, Arts Presenters (APAP) NYC, North American Folk Alliance Conference in Austin Texas, Rideau Conference in Québec City and Performing Arts Exchange (PAE) Baltimore MD.
Galitcha have two full length CDs, SATRANG, released in 2002 and Blé d’Inde Celebration in 2006, which features two collaborative pieces with Yves Lambert. Both recordings have received high acclaim from world and folk music radio and reviewers across the world.
