Philippe Laurent : artist, designer, musician
Philippe Laurent is a plastic artist, musicien and designer.
Graphic codes or digital codes, plastic arts or music, the approach of Philippe Laurent is a research on the perception of the signs and the symbols.
Multi-media artist, he has always been opened to new technologies, whether it is to compose its musical works or to complete its graphic work. His cross disciplinaries shows in France and Germany in the Nineties landmarked in the design of complex works mixing various advanced techniques.
His paintings, illusions of calligraphies on monochromic funds, are a question opened on the relationship between signs and meanings. Philippe Laurent develops ideograms halfway between figuration and abstraction, while endeavouring never repeating the same figure twice, like a writing of another continent or of an original language, a code which would have preceded all the other languages and which would have been lost.
This game on ambiguity asks the fundamental question of the ontological statute of the text in our western societies.
Philippe Laurent comes from a long personal study on the shape of the initiatory symbols and the letters to lead to sublimes alphabets esoteric.
« Philippe Laurent est artiste plasticien, designer et compositeur. A partir de 1981, ses participations à des expositions collectives de ses peintures sur plaques métalliques et photocopies sont déjà accompagnées de performances sonores. Parallèlement, il participe au mouvement du Mail-Art, ses pièces sont alors exposées dans de nombreux pays: Allemagne, Italie, Israël, Canada, Brésil, Pays Bas, Japon, Suède, USA. En 1985, il peint ses premières "calligraphies", des petits formats aussi bien que des grands drapeaux destinés à des installations. En 1986, dans une démarche transdisciplinaire par définition, il crée le Collectif Hot Bip, réunissant 68 plasticiens, écrivains, poètes et compositeurs internationaux. Par la suite, il se tourne vers le design et réalise des logos, affiches, catalogues, et pochettes de disques, ainsi que des architectures d'intérieur. Dès 1992, Philippe Laurent se consacre alors plus à ses compostions et réalisations musicales électroniques, aboutissant à deux grands spectacles multimédia qu'il met en scène: Faste Occidental, à l'Elysée Montmartre à Paris, et Atelier Nocturne, à Gelsenkirchen, en Allemagne. Ses albums Glorification de l'Electricité et Faste Occidental paraissent en 1994. Puis, il réalise des arrangements musicaux pour Marc Caro, Richard Pinhas, Julia Migenes et Death in June. Philippe Laurent compose aussi de nombreuses musiques de spectacle et pour la télévision. Thanks to the Iranian people forwarding us with their pictures, I was aware of their suffering long before the official media mentioned it. Perhaps I will never meet these Iranian digital friends posting videos and photographs of the repression.
