This was the way the authorities used to kill the dogs in Iasi, Romania in 2002-2004, but now this is over, after protests... They do not ... all » kill the dogs in our city any longer. The authorities decided to sterilize the dogs in Iasi from 2004. NOW what you'll see in the movie is what happens now in almost any city in Romania.Dogs are killed in many ways, and we want them to stop it. And we also need to know what happens with the public money destined for the state program for killing dogs.

Glina, Bucharest – January 2008
These are the pictures concerning the dogs of Glina taken during my last visit at the end of January.
Notwithstanding the real difficulties due to cold weather and snow, the situation has decidedly improved as, thanks to the donations collected, it was possible to guarantee them food, veterinary treatment and a suitable shelter.
We bought 40 double doghouses and 100 single doghouses, 50 of which meant for the Leyla shelter which houses 600 dogs.
We bought also a wood house to keep the food in, which can also be used by the workers, and a container to keep the puppies which need treatment in order to protect them from cold and guarantee the necessary hygienic conditions
Since the beginning of October we bought over 15 tons of food for the 400 dogs of Glina and the 600 ones of the Leyla’s shelter.
We bought a truckful of gravel and straw to be used inside the doghouses to keep them warm.
Vaccinations, various emergency surgery operations and sterilization were carried out at the Ortovet clinic, which is sponsored by Lamento Rumeno with your help.
We have settled a budget for 18.000 euro (1.500 euro/month) for the vaccination/sterilization program.
Bowls, blankets, coats, veterinary material, all the material collected thanks to you was promptly sent to Bucharest.
The food collections organized by many of your personally (grateful thanks to Animals Club of Trieste, to the associations and single volunteers for their precious contribution) were of fundamental importance.

My disappointment and resentment are due to the quite unclear situation concerning the fund collection in favour of Glina’s dogs. I received many notifications about a number of links, web sites and forums which mention the donations given by Lamento Rumeno Onlus to Glina’s dogs and which clearly ask for funds to be paid on personal bank current accounts of single individuals or associations totally unknown to me.
Lamento Rumeno never received any proposal/ request for a common partnership to support these animals by third parties.
We have spent 22.000 euro ( a part for the 600 dogs hosted at Leyla shelter) to improve the terrible conditions we found during our first visit in Glina, last October 2007.
We express our doubt concerning the destination and the proper use of the funds raised by some "animals lovers" on the web mentioned above.
What Lamento Rumeno gave was for the only and total benefit of Glina’s dogs, the victims of an irresponsible and unsuitable management which caused them only pain, hunger, illness and death.
Lamento Rumeno does not cooperate with Gabriela Lazar nor with Zdreanta Association.
No donation has been made by Lamento Rumeno directly to Zdreanta Association.
The reason why in some of the previous communications, promptly amended, Lamento Rumeno Onlus mentioned the name of Zdreanta Association is due to an inaccuracy on the part of who contacted us to ask for our intervention.

These are the dogs we found stabbed in Glina
we desperately need to relocate the dogs as soon as possible cause they are in danger
Frozen puppies
Our first trip to Romania dates back to August 2001.
Basescu, then mayor of Bucarest and now president of Romania, used extremely cruel methods to resolve the stray phenomenon. This mobilized many European animal associations in protest. The stray dog problem began in the eighties with Nicolae Ceausescu who demolished houses in the outskirts of Bucarest and in doing so, gave origin to the abominable structures called “blocks” made of tiny
apartments. The inhabitants were forced to abandon their animals on the streets where they began to uncontrollably reproduce. There were 80,000 dogs barbarically killed in one year.
The news of the stray massacre in Romanian territory spread and pushed us to actively take part by providing help for basic needs. We provided surgical instruments, medicines, sanitary material and funds towards buying food. In January 2001 we decided to build a shelter after a fruitful collaboration with the Bucarest NATURE association and after seeing the dramatic conditions of the animals. Our consumers have sustained our association with their great sensitivity to our cause. We were able to buy 3,000 mq of land on the outskirts of Bucarest with the funds we collected and there we built our dog kennel. Now we are working ..ing the veterinarian clinic.
There will be distance adoption, a valid means of support that allows us to guarantee one daily meal and any necessary care from the veterinarian to around 188 dogs and 55 cats who now reside in our shelter.
We faced a new emergency in January 2006: a Japanese diplomat lost his life after he was attacked by a stray. The authorities applied cruel security measures; 1500 dogs were exterminated in just 3 days. The worst thing were the numerous cases of individuals who personally intervened on the street by beating and poisoning the strays.
We immediately sprang into action by encouraging adoption: dogs come to Italy already vaccinated, sterilized and fitted with a microchip. They are destined for families who have volunteered, yet our thoughts go to those who are unfortunately still in Romanian territory.
Now we are involved in a very important sterilization campaign of strays in collaboration with Dr. Liviu Gaita at the Bucarest Ortovet clinic. The dogs are taken from the streets, sterilized and vaccinated. A recognition title that bears the Ortovet identification number is placed in one ear. Emergency interventions, vaccinations and sterilizations are sponsored for dogs whose owners can’t afford the costs, dogs who are staying in dog kennels on Romanian territory or vagrant dogs who are put back on the streets after being operated on. It is essential and a priority to stem the birth phenomenon so that the
appalling massacres on Romanian territory will stop. We must help ease the suffering of these stray animals.
These types of images reoccur daily: animals in desperate conditions and starving to death are rescued and
brought inside the refuge.
Rickets due to malnutrition is very widespread.
This is our CRIN who had been found near dead close to the refuge.
She was rescued and cured and now lives happily in Italy.
There has been a moderate improvement in the percentage of dogs abandoned since our programme of free sterilization and vaccination started at the Ortovet clinic in Bucarest thanks to Dr. Liviu Gaita. A considerable number of puppies are no longer abandoned to a certain death but are left near the actual clinic or even at the entrance to our shelter.
