Since their inception in 2006, The Vignettes have been rising through the ranks of the Sydney live scene with their twisted take on garage rock impressing all in their wake. Born out of a chance meeting at a party between Joel and Katie, The Vignettes experimented with different line-ups before stripping it back to only two. Katie, once an acoustic singer/songwriter with a penchant for heavy
metal, discovered a flare behind the drum kit and once fledgling model Joel found his wailing voice and an innate talent for guitar, which saw him developing new tuning techniques allowing him to play both bass and guitar lines simultaneously.
Their debut EP ‘Out Of Home On Our Own’, produced by Pnau’s Peter Mayes, was released mid 2008. Live credentials include the Come Together and
My Filthy Riot Festivals and supports for bands such as Sugar Army, Cut Off Your Hands and Faker.
Joel’s on-stage persona and on-line rants have also earned The Vignettes a reputation for being one of the most obscene and in your face acts in the country. Their new EP ‘Violence Solves Everything’, Out Now, showcases an updated, heavier sound for The Vignettes. With lyrics touching on everything from fear mongering in the media, relationships and flirtations with
transvestites, expect to hear a lot more from this dynamic duo in the months to come.
"Better than the White Stripes..."
- Drum Media (Review of Violence Solves Everything EP 17/11/09)
"Bratty Punk band The Vignettes showed a lot of presence with their two member drum/guitar cacophony... Youthful angry tunes to make a mother proud."
- Drum Media (Annandale Hotel 10/10/09)
"Before the crowd were treated to the Sugar Army effect, drum & guitar duo The Vignettes belted out some very likeable, energetic tunes. The pair was thankfully more The Mess Hall, than The White Stripes, meaning Katie B's skills behind the kit were a lot more impressive than a certain Ms White"

"It’s always interesting to see how a crowd will react to a band they probably haven’t heard of, especially when that crowd is full of people in the fashion and art industries. In other words – people who don’t really consider themselves “into live music”. Last night’s launch of the new fashion-focused “Tangent Magazine” was another opportunity to witness this phenomenon in action.
The band in question was up-and-comers The Vignettes, a two piece from Sydney, made up of Joel and Katie. With a girl on drums, and a guy on vocals and guitar, the immediate comparisons to the White Stripes are obvious – but unfounded. They sound nothing like them and I’m sick of such comparisons just because a band has two members of the opposite sex! But I digress...
Rather, the band really gave off a Paper Scissors sort of vibe (for lack of a better comparison) – that borderline dance feel, yet wholly rock and roll, and seemingly spontaneous. The tracks, while no doubt played as recorded, sort of had that “let’s add in this, and this- and that!” which is certainly a compliment. It made it a whole lotta' fun.
But most in the place, as expected, seemed unimpressed (although who knows what they actually thought) – moving far away from the stage so they could chat about “more important things”, no doubt pleased when the band reached their closing track “The Rich”. And as they walked off stage, telling anyone who didn't like them, to, in a word, go fuck themselves - it couldn't help but come off as strangely appropriate for the crowd they had just played to.
But any exposure is good exposure – and with the 25 minute set, they can happily say they impressed at least one person – this guy right here. me."
- The AU Review (QBar 18/08/09)
"Welcome The Vignettes, a surprisingly catchy two-piece (drums,
guitar and vocals) from Sydney, who like to channel the angry
screaming horror of the Rocky Horror Picture Show but swapping
the Time Warp for way, way more garage howl. Think a two piece
Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a male vocal with a potty mouth."

THE RUBYS FIRST BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA - 4 MORE SLEEPS
One year ago, on a lonely Wednesday evening at a forgettable Collingwood pub, The Rubys played their first gig. Twelve months on, the three scrappy-looking lads have under their belts better songs, more gigs and are infecting Melbourne audiences with catchy, raw, stomp rock n roll pretty much weekly. So to mark the milestone of reaching the ripe old age of one, The Rubys are celebrating with a birthday party! With around 40 gigs down over the previous year and a wildly raucous live set, there has been a lot of jumping around and beer consumed so this Friday at the Old Bar will be no exception. Expect some wild blues-driven sets by The Volatiles and The Bellows to warm things up, and the boy’s favourite two-piece The Cheats bringing it all home. 8:30 start, $8, Party hats provided.
Hope to see you down there and we can all rock out!!
