The tale of lost in found (ex. Lost in Found) is quite long and convoluted.
The band was formed in 2001, added and lost members within it’s life span of four years, fell apart in ’05 then reformed in ’07. Things came together then fell apart, then came together again, if you want to know more, read on...
First there was Taisuke, making sweet pop tunes on his four track cassette recorder in Kameido, Tokyo. He wore his obsession with Scotish pop on his sleeve. This drew the attention of Miwa, also a fan of catchy hook laden music. The year was 2001.
Along came Maki, who at the time was just picking up bass. Things were starting to come together and the 3 piece were rehearsing weekly in Sangenjaya, Tokyo.
Since Taisuke’s demos included him singing, but he was against doing it in front of other people, the group needed a member who could sing in English and play guitar. This is where Mike, singer, guitarist and songwriter came in. He liked Taisuke’s songs from the get go, and decided that the match was right since he also favours indie sounds especially in pop form. Mike’s friend whom he met and jammed with in Vancouver, Tetsu, a drummer, came along one day to a rehearsal and decided to stay and provide some kick.
Then came Michael, an American living in Saitama at the time. He could play keyboards, and help with arrangements. Now a six piece, almost a year into existence the band was still nameless. Miwa liked the sound of Lost and Found. But since countless Lost and Found’s existed already, including a great underground 60’s psych band, Mike thought Lost in Found looked more poetic and still sounded close to Miwa’s band name.
Lost in Found had their first live performances at open mic nights in Tokyo. It wasn’t until Yuki, who was learning how to play flute and trumpet, joined the group that lost in found was fully formed and ready to play some real live shows.
The group existed in this form for about 1 year, and was able to record 10 songs, 7 of which are on "falling star" album (self released). But, Things started to unhinge when Miwa went to England first, then San Francisco. Then, Michael followed suit and decided the U.S.A. was the place for him.
The band was now without a keyboard player and lost without miwa’s sweet vocals. Thus, Mineko came to the rescue. She could play keys and had a lovely tone to her voice.
Shortly after that, Taisuke decided, for personal reasons, to call it quits.
Lost in Found was now without it’s originator, but still decided to persevere recruitng Daichan the guitarist of 4 bonjour’s parties. In it’s newer form, the band was able to record "Chemical Physical ", a 5 song e.p. which was a little more punchier and rockier than previous material.
Again things fell apart. Without Taisuke and Miwa Lost in Found was losing momentum and drive to continue on and in 2005 the decision was reached to disband.
About a year following the break up, Mike recalled the great times he had with the band, and nostalgia took control. During this time, Miwa came back to Japan and the idea of a reunion was thrown into the air. All the original members, take away Michael, decided that it would be fun to reform. Although Taisuke has unfortunately dropped out again, it’s newest formation includes Mike Matuszak (guitar, vocals), Miwa Yahagi (vocals and various instruments), Maki Kusakabe (bass), Satoshi Saito aka Tetsu (drums), Mineko Matuszak (keyboard, vocals), Yuki Hamada (trumpet, flute) and Ayumu Haitani (electric gutar).
You can catch the band playing around Tokyo and currently in the process of putting together some new recordings.
