  • Bio

Mai Bloomfield is a singer-songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist. Born and raised in Los Angeles, her musical path began with cello at age nine, and by 16 she was playing and writing her own songs on guitar. Out of college, Mai helped start the all-female band Raining Jane, who have since released 4 albums. The band has written with Jason Mraz (including "A Beautiful Mess"), they've had songs placed on Grey's Anatomy, and they also helped launch the non-profit Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles. When she's not on the road with Raining Jane, Mai accompanies other artists on cello. She's played on records for folks like Jason Mraz and Willy Porter, and she's appeared on programs such as The Tonight Show with Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson. In 2011 Mai started playing with Adam Cohen for the world tour and release of his record "Like A Man." While most of her time is spent collaborating with others, it's her dedication to songwriting that drives her evolution as an artist. She recently released her first EP to rave reviews; the title track "Eclipse" became Song of the Year on Jivewired Radio, and she was a winner of the 2011 Kerrville New Folk songwriting contest and a finalist in the Telluride Troubadour songwriting contest. Whether she's playing solo or with others, one thing's for sure; Mai approaches music from the heart. It shows in her work and is felt by those who listen.

Bio:

Mai Bloomfield writes songs, sings and plays guitar and cello. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, her musical path started with cello at age nine. From grade school up to college, Mai played in symphonies and chamber groups, traveling to Washington D.C. and Austria, receiving awards in various orchestral competitions. When she was 16 she got her first guitar and, fueled with a love of poetry, she began to write songs.

Since 1999, Mai has been one of the two lead singers and one of the four songwriters in the indie folk/rock band RAINING JANE. She also plays guitar and cello in the group. The band has carved a name for themselves in the independent music scene by touring over 120 shows per year. In 2008 they co-wrote “A Beautiful Mess” with JASON MRAZ, which appeared on his chart-topping album “We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.” They’ve also had songs placed on “GREY’S ANATOMY”, “SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE” and “BROTHERS & SISTERS.”

In conjunction with her work in Raining Jane, Mai keeps active as a cellist and solo artist. As a cellist, she’s been featured on records with JASON MRAZ and WILLY PORTER and has appeared on programs such as THE TONIGHT SHOW with SARA BAREILLES and INGRID MICHAELSON. As a solo artist, she writes and plays on guitar and has toured with a handful of national artists. In 2009 she released her first solo effort “Eclipse” and in 2010 those songs led Mai to become a FINALIST in the 2010 TELLURIDE TROUBADOUR and KERRVILLE NEW FOLK songwriting contests.

Driven by her love of songwriting, Mai has made it a point to keep herself at the drawing board, attending song seminars, workshops and retreats. She has taught songwriting to girls ages 8-17 at a summer music camps, and is on the executive board that launched “ROCK N’ ROLL CAMP FOR GIRLS LOS ANGELES” in 2010, dedicated to empowering girls through music education.
