I was born in Sydney in 1955 and grew up in Vaucluse and Double Bay. I attended Vaucluse Public School and Sydney Grammar School, where I was assisted by scholarship.
I graduated from Sydney University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Law. I also won a Rhodes Scholarship and completed a further law degree at Oxford. I have since had successful careers in the fields of journalism, law and business.
In 1997 I was elected to attend the Australian Constitutional Convention. I led the Republican case in that Convention and in the subsequent referendum.
I have initiated numerous policy and research projects in areas such as education, indigenous affairs, home ownership affordability, balancing work and family responsibilities and national population and fertility policy.
In October 2004, I was elected as the Federal Member for Wentworth at the general elections. I have long held an interest in water policy and water conservation in particular. I was appointed Minister for the Environment and Water Resources in January 2007, having held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister since January 2006. Prior to this I was a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and the House of Representatives Standing Committees on Economics, Health and Ageing and Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
I married my wife Lucy in 1980, who has not only been my partner in marriage but in our many businesses. Lucy was the first female Lord Mayor of Sydney, a position she held until early 2004. We have two children, Alex and Daisy, who attended local schools and have now both completed university.

Voters face a choice between "new" leadership and "right" leadership after Prime Minister John Howard ended months of phoney campaigning by calling a November 24 election.
Mr Howard opened his campaign with a plea to voters to stick with his ageing government as it aims for a fifth consecutive term.
"This country does not need new leadership, it does not need old leadership, it needs the right leadership," Mr Howard, 68, told reporters an hour after his long-awaited visit to Government House to ask permission to call the election.

Wayne Swan has today finally admitted that the Treasurer's criticism of Labor's poorly-developed tax policy is correct.
The Australian has today reported on its website that within three days of the announcement of its tax policy, Labor has been forced to review it.
According to The Australian website, "[Mr Swan] said that review may or may not show that Labor's package is not as generous to some income earners." (theaustralian.news.com.au 22/10/07)
Under Labor, part-time workers earning $41,000 per year will be $600 worse off than under the Coalition's plan.
Mr Swan's poorly-developed alternate tax proposal has further highlighted the risk a Labor government would pose to the continued strength of Australia's economy.
As the Prime Minister said today:
"...I think taxpayers are interested in economic competence. If Mr Rudd and Mr Swan had really understood how our tax system operates, they'd have taken care to check the distributional tables against the threshold that they adopted and are now stuck with, which will result in those taxpayers in middle income land being $600 a year worse off under their plan than they would be under ours."
If it can't get its own tax policy right, Labor can't be trusted to manage Australia's $1.1 trillion economy.

LIBERTY & DEMOCRACY PARTY TO SUPPORT TURNBULL IN WENTWORTH
2 October 2007 Assuming no last minute decision by the Government that prevents the pulp mill in Tasmania from proceeding, the LDP is proposing to direct its preferences in Wentworth to the Liberal candidate, Malcolm Turnbull, making it an exception to its policy of putting the sitting member last.
"We consider the Gunns pulp mill to be a test of whether Australia is open for business", said LDP Secretary David Leyonhjelm. "The mill will be built on land zoned heavy industrial, next to an existing woodchip mill and just down the road from an aluminium smelter. It will use existing transport infrastructure and wood supplies.

Did you know John Hammond, the scallop fisherman, had his house raided by the police for no apparent reason?
If you ever get into government in a serious way, you owe us a royal commission to bust the lid off the corrupt grubs down here- you might like to ask Mike 'no policies' Ferguson what he thinks, if you can tear him away from the Elusive Brethren.

Australia is one of few countries on track to meet its existing Kyoto emissions reduction target on the basis of domestic action alone. :)
The Coalition established the world-first Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET) - a legislated national renewable energy market based on an innovative system of tradable certificates which has stimulated $3.5 billion of investment in renewable energy technologies since its introduction in 2001.
Australia played a leading role among 21 APEC nations to sign the Sydney Declaration - a historic commitment by all leaders to address the challenge posed by climate change. APEC economies agreed to the need for an overall global goal for emissions reductions - a very significant step towards a truly comprehensive climate change framework.
The Australian Government has committed some $20 billion to a comprehensive range of measures to restore and protect our natural environment.
The Australian Government has announced that they will implement the most comprehensive emissions trading system in the world. The cap and trade system will help Australia substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the lowest cost.
The Australian Government's commitment is evident to tackling climate change. In 1998 Australia became the first country in the world to establish a dedicated climate change agency - the Australian Greenhouse Office.
The government will conduct careful analysis of a long-term goal for emissions reduction in order to ensure that we fully understand the economy-wide impacts as a nation.
The government has established the $500 million Low Emissions Technology Demonstration Fund which has supported six projects:
*$75 million towards a $420 million project to build a large-scale solar concentrator in regional Victoria.
*$50 million towards a $360 million pilot for a brown-coal drying and post-combustion carbon dioxide capture and storage project.
*$60 million to support the world's larges

With the real risk that the Greens could have the balance of power in the Senate after the Federal Election, Australians can no longer ignore the dangerous policy ideas the Greens will seek to impose.
The Greens' policies and recent public statements provide people with an overview of the Greens' policies to assist in combating that party's most radical economic and social views, and to understand the policies the Greens would seek to have the ALP accept in return for support in the Senate.
The Greens have policies that would lead to higher taxes, build a new welfare state and lead to an open door policy for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants. Taken together, these policies would add up to a disaster for Australia.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) had access to $1.3 billion dollars, yet underspent on park management and sustainable water supply, Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change Andrea Coote said.
Figures in DSE's annual report tell a tale of woeful underspending including $29.2 million for park management, as well as $12.2 million earmarked for water management and supply.
"Given that Parks Victoria is renowned in the state's rural regions as the neighbour from hell, surely that extra $29.2 million could have gone towards tackling pest plants and animals.
"The consistent mismanagement of state parks is a shameful reflection of this government's lack of commitment to country Victoria, and holding back almost $30 million in funding is just disgraceful.
Mrs Coote said the government was so desperate to dismiss its mismanagement that it blamed a fly plague for a drop in visitor satisfaction for Parks Victoria.
However, Mrs Coote said perhaps the most outrageous revelation in the annual report was the $12.2 million left to languish in state coffers when it should have been directed to desperate water security measures.
"This is a 10-year drought - and yet we discover the government has failed to spend all possible money earmarked for projects that would secure more water.
"How can the Brumby Government demand funding from the Federal Government for water projects that are already eight years overdue, when this government fails to spend its own money first?"
"The Brumby Government is directly responsible for eight years of weed-infested state land, and parched townships with no water security. Underspending when funding was allocated to assist in the crisis is a slap in the face for rural Victoria," Mrs Coote said.

"We have a metropolitan planning policy that aims to contain growth, and a population policy that aims for growth at all cost. The two key components of planning policy are totally incompatible."
When considering the current population growth rate the following facts must be considered:
Melbourne has enough land supply for 25 years at a one per cent or lower growth rate but we've exceeded this rate since the late 1990s;
Dwindling land supply and booming population will force up the cost of land and add to the housing affordability crisis;
Population boom means greater pressure on infrastructure and services such as public transport, roads, water, education, health and aged and disability services.
"While having full knowledge of these facts, the state government is doing nothing and allowing Melbourne to sleepwalk to an urban planning disaster," Mr Guy said.

"Transport Minister John Watkins' promises of a rail network where everyone is working for the good of commuters have failed to materialise, with the workforce divided and ineffective," Mr O'Farrell said.
"Last week the Auditor-General revealed overcrowding nearly doubled from 9% of services in 2006 to 16% of services in 2007. John Watkins' response was to triple the overcrowding target, not fix the problem.
"It was John Watkins that cut 416 daily train services from the network, it was John Watkins that slowed trains down because they couldn't run to timetable, it was John Watkins that changed the definition of a late train, it was John Watkins who said the wind was to blame for a train hatch falling off when it was later revealed a maintenance failure was the cause, and it's John Watkins who is asking commuters to pay more while services are not improving.
