Tim O'Brien, Gillian Welch, The Books, Cole Porter, The Beatles, Alison Krauss, must we name them all?...
Sounds Like
Hopefully like us... but if we must, imagine common ground found between Dean Martin and Gillian Welch.
"The Train Song" video by Alex Loops -- Roots of Carolina
"Mandolin Orange played their pared down brand of modernized bluegrass-folk at Open Eye Café Sunday. The couple’s spare instrumentation—whether they paired mandolin, guitar, or fiddle—emphasized the purity of their vocals and Andrew Marlin’s talent for songwriting. Barefoot songstress Emily Frantz’s angelic voice soared, proving that despite the Auto-Tune trends in today’s music, listeners—at least those in Carrboro—can recognize a good thing when they hear it. As the duo’s harmonies ended, the crowded coffee shop thundered its applause. They always say the couple that plays together, stays together." --Linnie Greene, Daily Tar Heel, on Carrboro Music Festival '09
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- we'll add that.... we met in Chapel Hill in January of 2009 and have been playing ever since. Andrew moved to Chapel Hill from Warrenton, NC in 2008 to complete his first album (myspace.com/drusmus). I (Emily) grew up in Chapel Hill and have played here for the past several years. Aside from the occasional standard or familiar cover we perform, Andrew writes a delicious array of songs. They span many genres but maintain a folk sound with powerful lyrics and haunting melodies.

Of course I want to be friends with you! I've seen you at least 2 times and you've blown me away consistently. You are great and let me know if there's anything I can do for you. That's no party line, that's a line just for mandolin orange. wishing you the best.
Great show on Ocracoke yesterday. Finally got to see ya'll after hearing about you all summer. Great vocals and performance as well as songwriting. Loved the Gillian Welch too. If you ever need a place to stay on your travels to Ocracoke. Drop us a line. My fiance and I run Pam's Pelican Bed & Breakfast and we have special rates for musicians. Peace, Love and Bacon Grease! Mike
Man I love yall, and andrew I miss the heck outta you man. Everything you two put into your work is just amazing, so humbly profound and so damn enjoyable. Again you found a fan in me man, and I'm lookin forward to seeing it all live.
I hope you guys will post a video or two of your live performances on Youtube. Since you can automatically post it to your own Facebook or Myspace profile, it's another great way to get exposure, especially exposure beyond NC. I know I will be posting a link if you do.
