MITAKUYE OYASIN.
I salute the light within your eyes where the whole Universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am that place within me, we shall be one. A very great vision is needed and the man who has it must follow it as the eagle seeks the deepest blue of the sky.” - Tatanka yo Tanka
Nahko - Medicine for the People
Medicine for the People is not a band.
Medicine for the People is just that. Medicine.
With strong lyrically driven melodies, the Portland, Oregon based trio is bringing new fire to fusion music and refreshing energy to the Movement of Unification of all Peoples.
MFTP will activate all senses and inspire to look inward for solutions to outward problems. Rights of Indigenous peoples, race, sustainable energy practices, healthy foods and living, spiritual activation, cultural awareness, environmental activism, personal evolution, healing through music, paradigm shifting, focus intention, gathering and creating, to survive, to awaken, to listen - are just a few topics MFTP focuses on in their music as well as personal lives. "We want to bring joy to a fear-based world and show everyone that their IS hope and it starts with SELF."
If their mission statement wasn't strong enough - Medicine for the People has the musical talent to back it up.
On the tip of the arrow is singer/song-writer - Nahkohe-ese Mendiola.
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon and currently residing on the Big Island of Hawaii, Nahko has quite a story from birth to his young 23 years. From adoption into a different race and culture, to Alaska as musical director for a summer dinner theater, to reunion with birth-family, to Hawaii and the teachings of Pele, to continual rediscovery of self and his Aquarian leadership role - Nahkohe-ese - which means " a friendly little bear " in Cheyenne - is teaching and learning how to live in a sacred manner. Through his teens, Nahko taught and directed high school choirs and private students on the piano and voice. He has taken his background in music and moved onto other instruments including guitar and drum - cleverly weaving poetry and creative writing techniques into story and melody. With the slogan "Real Talk Music" you can expect to hear and feel the positive energy.
Nahko's vision for Medicine for the People involves collaborations with many of the talented musicians, actors, MCs, farmers, acrobats, activists, shamans, elders, teachers, moms, dads, that he's met on the road to create a troupe of movers and shakers bringing joy and light through music, dance, and visual aids - not only from city to city but to the front lines of environmental disaster sights and to gatherings for the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Jazz fusion in MFTP is brought by Connecticut native and Berklee School of Music graduate Max Ribner. His ingenious, creative, and tasteful flugle horn lines draw listeners of all ages near and his sparkling eyes catch everyone's attention. His raw food diet has become a traditional talking point at MFTP shows and his love for simplistic living continues to show even in his music. Max collaborates with many musicians in Portland and is making quite a name for himself in various communities in the NW.
The Tribal and traditional sound comes from percussionist, Kentucky native, and Portland based Hope Medford. You'll never meet a woman who can play the cajon or djembe like Ms. Medford. African trained on both the cajon and djembe, Hope brings high energy and driving beats through the cajon box drum and her off-stage vibrations. Hope is a drum instructor and runs her own mid-wifery business out of her home in PDX.
