like leo kottke said, "a goose fart on a foggy day".
"Bit of a tonic for the troops here, from the opening 'Pearshaped' the warmth and sheer heart just infuse the whole thing, yeah, even the starkly observed 'Your Dad Sells Lighters'. Musically, its almost a swing kind of thing and pretty much a light and bouncy bit of kit with totally ace guitars, pedal steel and jaw harps, but it remains solidly English, northern England. All the same 'Pearshaped' is a warm, wry record with eleven beautiful observations of the human condition and the inhuman conditions some of us live in. I defy anyone to listen to 'Shipping News' and refuse to buy this record." - Unpeeled
"The startlingly accomplished singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist Neville Clay has the happy knack of stumbling across his muse in the unlikeliest of places, from the school-staff room to the market stall, from the health-clinic to the betting-shop, down at the chippy and up at the call centre. Football, lottery scratch-cards, the Animal Liberation Front, council flats, lager, Stanley knives and mail-order catalogues; the very clay, as it were, that forms the building blocks of English suburbia - its the medium which is the message here. His caustic, trenchant and bitingly witty observations are the musical equivalent of a Mike Leigh play; sparse, sad, cynical, frightening, endlessly amusing - and occasionally extraordinarily beautiful. Be Gentle With Yourself, Serendipity and Shipping News are like unexpected works of art found amidst scenes of dereliction, and at his best Clay conjurs up breathtaking poetical couplets out of the dust left behind: Theres nothing I want to take from her except the eczema on her hands. She drinks tea and smokes Bensons and thats all I understand(from Staff Room). File somewhere between Michael Chapman and Pat Orchard, but make a note of where you put it, because listening is an education in itself." - Ptolomic Terrascope
Good luck with those lyrics! Getting a rough idea down is never a problem, but anything beyond a couple of verses is usually beyond me...
If you can't manage to do anything with them, let me have them back & I'll see what I can manage with them for a track of my own. Sure some of that Nev magic will produce something way better than I'd ever be capable of though. Bastard! ;-)
Let me know when you're on again & I'll try to get along.
'Tony Robinson's tears'---absolutely magical ---Never did I once imagine that someone famous for his 'cunning plans' could appear in such a beautiful song! x
Described by Hydragenic as 'a subtle, widescreen sountrack for the bitter break-up of a relationship', London's Elks are unclassifiable in their unconventional brilliance, a band always evolving, taking chances and refusing to sit still. Following a successful string of European shows, the band are coming to Newcastle tonight, Monday 16 June. Also on the bill are Spraydog, Italy's Three In One Gentlemans Suit, and The Black Static of Summer. This one is at the Newcastle Arts Centre, entry is £4 and doors are at 8pm.
These United States/Vandaveer was one of our favourite shows of the year in 2007, so we're super happy to announce that they're both making a return to The Head of Steam, Newcastle on Sunday 22 June. This Washington DC outfit serve up country-tinged folk sautéed in electronic seasoning; along with artier neighbours Le Loup and Exit Clov, These United States offer melodic and amusing ideas to the post-Fugazi landscape, but they're still tied to thoughtful ones-in this case, mostly protesting heartless romantic antics - Village Voice. A co-promotion with our friends Ex-Libris Records, the bill also features John Egdell and Aaron McMullan. Doors are 8pm and entry is £4.
Hello Nevillion, thank you for playing I Hope You Know the other night. It means a lot to me that ditty. And thanks too for prefacing it with a nervous assurance that: 'It's a love song. It's not for Rory though'. Which left a pervasive atmosphere of supressed homoerotic longing akin to the work of Annie Proulx. But then, I was drinking a lot of Fosters. Love regardless. Rory
Either follow the links above or search "Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire" on iTunes.
"Produced by ¡Forward, Russia!'s Tom Woodhead, debut single A Fire Born In Dallas (released on the Pay For The Piano imprint) finds post-hardcore and prog influences welded together to create a sound that is both vulnerable and self-assured. Admittedly, the usual influences of Fugazi and At The Drive-In are worn pretty obviously, but the band are far more than mere copyists.
Indeed, at their single launch they offered an intense and impassioned performance, with snare cracks and upstrokes reverberating around the venue.
Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire, it would seem, have more than enough firepower in their sonic arsenal to kick some of the music world's feted young pretenders into touch. " The Metro
Stars of the Lid are easily one of the most important and influential bands or our times. Read a review of any ambient or experimental band these days and you will see their name being dropped, and it’s not hard to hear why. Stars of the Lid are masters of weaving sonic textures gorgeously into beautiful, absorbing, minimalist epic drones, wavering between subtly mournful and gloriously triumphant, offering the perfect soundtrack to lucid daydreaming.
Hear Stars Of The Lid play in Newcastle in a perfect church setting for this very special show. Buy tickets now or purchase from RPM, Beatdown or alt. vinyl!

Finally got round to mixing down one of the tracks you did with us however many months ago it was. Just posted it on our page - it's called "Dial Nine".
Not sure it's doing our psychedelic metal bashing image any good at all, doing such ambient stuff, but an enjoyable collaboration none-the-less!

Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
