According to CNet's Download.com Editor, "He's a husky-voiced young troubadour from the U.K., so we're primed to hear the Nick Drake in Mr. Castle's voice. But while Castle could surely nail a cover of "Pink Moon," it's our own man from Massachusetts, James Taylor, who his gentle melodies more clearly recall."
Reviewing his debut CD EP 'Hold Out for Summer' John O'Regan wrote, "Paul Castle writes the kind of songs which make songwriting the valuable and worthy trade it is. Well crafted intelligent lyrics set to contagious melodies and artists like Frances Black and others have been quick to realise this and snap up his material. The CD perfectly illustrates his musical and lyrical attributes. 'Write Him a Letter' and 'Louise (Kick off your dancing shoes) are the tuneful radio playlist staples while 'Just about leaving' leaves a melancholy yet powerful after effect and the wistful title track nails his melodic colours to the mast. The 'Old Bear StoriesTV theme song' shows another side with an infectuous children's song. 'Hold out for summer' proves the art of quality songwriting is alive and well." In 1995 Paul's song 'Write him a letter' was covered by Irish star Frances Black (with her sister Mary Black on harmony vocals) on her album 'The Sky Road' which topped the Irish charts that year. The song, re-titled by Frances as 'Send Him a Letter', was subsequently included on the best selling compilation album 'The Loving Time' and also on 'The Best of Frances Black', which was released in 2000. Frances still regularly performs the song in her live performances. Download now from
But Paul is perhaps best known for his music for the 1993 BAFTA award-winning Children's TV series of Jane Hissey's Old Bear Stories which has now been shown in over 70 countries throughout the world. Paul wrote and performed the theme song - which includes Mat Fox on hammered dulcimer and Alison Goldfrapp of Goldfrapp on harmony vocals - and the background music for 39 episodes and two extended Christmas specials. The series, which went on to also win awards at the New York and Chicago Film Festivals, has recently been repeated on Channel Five in the UK - see Old Bear Stories Download now from
Paul is also a member of the UK bluegrass, Cajun and country blues trio The Rosinators, described by Dee Hallett as "fast gaining a reputation as one of the UK's finest bands". Finalists in the Glastonbury Festival Unsigned Bands Competition in 2004, the band have since played at Glastonbury & Edinburgh Fringe festivals among many others all over the UK and Ireland. In 2005 their song 'Cindy's Breakdown' won Hotdisc 'Track of the Year' at the UK Country Radio Awards and their last single Little Sadie reached No.2 on the British Country Hotdisc Charts. Thanks for your really sweet comment. I'd love a UK tour, but don't actually tour much at all. Must be why I'm not insanely famous, hmm? Good news is, I have very little trouble with those pesky paparazzi. Your music is lovely as well. I really like "House". It's truth. Glad to "meet" you. Blessings.
