Saturday 10/13 in Bastrop Texas

The Campaign to End the Death Penalty invites you to
spend this Saturday with Rodney Reed's family and friends in Bastop. We are headed there for an afternoon of solidarity and education in support of their struggle against the Texas death penalty.

Rodney Reed has spent 9 years on Texas' death row despite strong evidence in support of his innocence. Currently, his case is before the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals which has the power to grant him a new trial. Please visit www.freerodneyreed.org for more information about this case.

We will start with a march through Bastrop, then gather in Kerr Community Park followed by music & spoken word, and end with a screening of the documentary State vs Reed. Food and drink will be available.

NEW TRIAL NOW! NO EXECUTION!

IN BASTROP, TEXAS
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13TH
STARTING AT 3 PM
KERR COMMUNITY PARK
AT MLK AND WALNUT
From Austin take I-35 South and take Hwy 71 East toward Bastrop. About 25 miles. Take the Hasler/Childers and Loop 150 exit. Take a left at the second light (Loop 150). Go through downtown Bastrop and after you cross the railroad tracks, take a right on Martin Luther King. Go one block and take a right on Walnut to park.

OR

Carpool/Caravan with us! We will meet starting at 1pm at the parking lot to the west of the LBJ School, on the corner of Red River and Dean Keeton. Contact us for more information.

Fuerza Unida and Esperanza invite you to ...

Community Forum on the
US Social Forum

Saturday, Sept. 29th, 2007
2PM-5PM
***refreshments provided***
@ Esperanza Peace & Justice Center
922 San Pedro Ave., SA TX 78212

The United States Social Forum (USSF) took place in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this year. Over 12,000 people from all over the US and the world gathered to "build relationships, learn from each other's experiences, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, and bring renewed insight and inspiration."

"The USSF sent a powerful message to other people's movements around the world that there is an active movement in the US opposing US policies at home and abroad." (www.ussf2007.org).

Join individuals and organizations that attended the USSF and returned eager to share our experiences. We hope to begin a community dialogue about ways to move forward within our communities of San Antonio, Texas, and the US Southwest as we continue to build a social justice movement.

The DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act is going to a vote! It has been postponed from today until tomorrow (?). Please show your support by calling and/or e-mailing senators to tell them that you support the DREAM Act.

The DREAM Act would provide a path to legality for persons brought illegally to the United States by their parents as children, or whose parents attempted to immigrate legally but were then denied legality after several years in application, and whose children thus derived their legal status solely from their parents (the child also becoming illegal upon the parent's denial).

To qualify, the immigrant student would have to meet certain requirements such as:

Proof of having arrived in the United States before reaching 16 years of age;
Proof of residence in the United States for a least five (5) consecutive years since their date of arrival.
Having graduated from an American High School, or obtained a GED.
"Good moral character," essentially defined as the absence of a significant criminal record (or any drug charges whatsoever).
An estimated 65,000 immigrant students who meet these requirements graduate from high school each year.
