"Sanctuary is about helping other people! It is not a group, but an album of music supporting charities which help victims of domestic violence. Sanctuary was recorded in July 2007 at Glenstal Abbey, Co. Limerick, Ireland. "
That is how we started the Sanctuary project, with the intention of producing an album which would make some money for charities supporting victims of domestic violence.
Since then Sanctuary has become an ever growing family of musician friends who work together for the benefit of others by producing music, both live and recorded, with all profit going directly to charity.
The Sanctuary album features artists: Moya Brennan, Mary Coughlan, Cara O'Sullivan, Noirin Ni Riain, her sons - Eoin Ó Súilleabháin and Mícheál P. Ó Súilleabháin, Jimmy O'Brien-Moran, his son - James O'Brien-Moran, Nassau Royal, Tonnta, the Monks of Glenstal and many others. The genres of music include: Traditional Irish; Folk; Gregorian Chant; Contemporary Popular and Classical.
The Sanctuary concerts have gone on to include many other musicians such as Alyth McCormack, Seneca, Daniel Murray and Brian Houston, always with the same proviso that they do so at no cost so as to support the Sanctuary charities.
Domestic violence affects people from every walk of life, every social class, women, children and men. The compilation of musical styles in our album reflects that fact - violence in the home can effect anyone so in this 'Sanctuary' we hope to provide something for everyone.
All profits from the album will go to: ADAPT HOUSE in Limerick, which provides support to women and children; AMEN, which is a national support to male victims of violence in the home, and the ISPCC (Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). All the artists have given of their work and time at no cost. In fact, they have raised the money to pay for the production of this album so that these charities can benifit from the sale of every CD.
We invite you to become a friend of Sanctuary and add your voice to those working against violence in the home. Drop in from time to time as we change the tracks, so you can get to hear the whole album. We'd be glad to receive your comments. Hope you enjoy the music!
