Long Grass and the Tall Trees

Following his gruff, antiwar Internet hit "I've Lost All Faith," which reached No. 11 out of 2,570 selections on Neil Young's "Living with War: Songs of the Times" website, Tampa folkie Steve Vaclavik releases Long Grass and the Tall Trees. The eight-song batch of originals, recorded at Pro Star Recording in St. Pete, features Vaclavik mostly alone with his acoustic guitar (there's understated percussion interspersed), strumming familiar chords and singing intriguing tales like the murder report "Run Mary." The only misstep is the track "Bob Dylan," an imagined meeting with the rock poet, which, at this point, is about as relevant as a "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" cover. 3 stars

Sounds Like
Let's put it this way...I'll never be an American Idol. But I see that as a good thing. I think I would be in good company because I don't think people like Lennon, Dylan, Petty or Hendrix would have been either. I've been told I sound like a mix between Dylan and Petty and some folks have said I sound like Clapton. (As a singer, not as a player unfortunately. But I'll take what I can get.) I've also been compared to an old beat up, comfortable, sofa. (That would take way too long to explain - but hopefully you get the idea.)

All right, enough of that! As soon as I learned a couple of chords I started writing songs - some with a message, some that are silly and some with a silly message. I'm honored to have had the opportunity to perform at Nashville's Bluebird Café at their songwriter's night on two occasions. I write what I feel, and as the old joke goes - sometimes I don't feel too good. Or as I've heard that Townes Van Zandt said once when asked if he knew any happy songs - "These are happy songs."
You guys R-O-C-K !!!!! GREAT show last night at Pro Star!!! Amazing combination of talent playing incredible songs!!! Hope to see many more shows with this band in the near future!!!
