Few bands right now are riding the new-wave disco interface quite like Transformer, the Brighton-based quartet described by brightonmusicscene.com com as “future
disco heroes in the making”.
Formed in 2005 by Johny Giles (vocals, trumpet, keyboards) and Craig Mack (bass guitar), Transformer really took shape when the pair moved to Brighton, quickly
gaining a reputation for their firing live shows at venues throughout the city.
Now comprised of Johny, Craig, Ben Adamo (guitar, keys) and Stephane Hourdille (drums), the group’s tautly-honed grooves draw inspiration from far-flung corners of
the musical galaxy, meaning that their floor-friendly sound fits as comfortably alongside DJs like Erol Alkan as does supporting Holy Fuck, not to mention their
extensive run of both British and international festival performances.
Drawing on influences that include Talking Heads, James Chance, Funkadelic, and A Certain Ratio, Transformer’s sound has also pricked up the ears of Channel 4
producers on the show ‘The In-Betweeners’, where the band played live in one of the first season’s episodes.
We have recently been short-listed in the Live & Unsigned Category at the prestigious Vodafone Live Awards 2008 (hosted by Steve Jones & Juliette Lewis at the
Carling Academy, Brixton)
"Dapper disco mavericks and the only British band capable of turning any venue they play into a dream version of The Danceteria in 1979. Most 'indie-dance' bands are grooveless
fakes who know a trendy DJ. Transformer are the party-hearty, steeped-in-disco, Real Thing."
Garry Mulholland, Q / OMM
Concorde 21st Birthday:
"...Local New wave disco outfit Transformer topped off the live music entertainment for the night. Their sound is a liquefied jumble of electro keyboards, fizzy synths and post
punk guitar riffs, with clear vocals cutting through.
If you like Hot chip you’ll love these guys, future disco heroes in the making." Jess Hamil, BrightonMusicScene
"Transformer aren't just one of the best dance bands in Brighton, they are one of the best in the country, filtering post-punk New York quirkiness through the sons-of-Daft Punk
french electro scene.."" James Kendall- Source Mag
"Transformer are playing to a packed out room at The Hope. The singer bears an uncanny semblance to that of Talking Heads era David Byrne and you could easily imagine them being
on a label like DFA. Funky bass lines collide head on with rhythms that instantly make you want to move your feet." Nathan Westley-ArtRocker
