Singer-songwriters may be a dime a dozen these days, but good songs are still worth their weight in gold, and at least as rare as that precious metal. Whitney Lockert is the rare singer-songwriter whose songs stand up to repeated listenings, revealing new aspects of themselves each time. Whitney estimates he has written around a hundred songs in the ten or so years since he began writing, ranging in style from surf instrumentals to hardcore rockers to beautiful introspective ballads.
Whitney’s musical journey begins with a profound love of the guitar. At age 16 he was a regional semi-finalist in the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Competition, an experience that brought him together with other talented young players and included meeting Jimi’s father and sister. Whitney played in various bands throughout high school and college, and after graduating from UC Berkeley with a BA in philosophy, he began traveling, performing as a solo artist along the way in Thailand and Laos, as well as in California. He also began working as a sideman, performing in Europe, Libya, and major festivals in the US with Luna Angel, and in Mexico City and Athens with Nigerian reggae singer Majek Fashek. Whitney has also recorded for ABC TV commercials and with Grammy winning new age music pioneer Kitaro.
He plans to continue performing his own songs solo and in groups, as well as to collaborate with other musicians of many styles.
Hey Whitney, How's life in NY? You and Quinn playing together at all? Just letting you know I'll be watching tonight on the webcam. You going home for the holidays at all? Shows? Dan
One last thing while we're in virtual contact: there is a GREAT Noel Gallagher interview in the current issue of Spin, the one with Kings of Leon on the cover. I got a free subscription cause I got my parents tickets to Outside Lands to see Tom Petty, and it came in the mail, and I was all ready to skim it, cut some pictures out and throw it away, but I think it's a keeper!
My phone can't text, but you're right, that was a pretty fun time. High school was great. What are you being for Halloween this year? (And I copyrighted Tin Tin so forget it!)
ok, your new song is proof that new york was an excellent idea. a really fucking good idea. i am super excited for you! i know you are really close to finding the right place and time to burst out. besides all that abstract shit, i hope you are having a lot of fun and easily finding a place to live and food to eat. i also hope that somewhere on a street corner there is a trash can on fire with your name on it, and four black doo-wop guys waiting for you to bring in the funk.
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am sooo happy you are coming!!!!!!!!!! we are all soooo stoked you'll be there! hooooooooraaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!
Whitney, Thanks so much for the CD's. I'm loving them. You really need to make much more! Best of luck with the move and I hope there is a lot of music making in the near future! Take it easy, Dan
