Robin "Adnan" Anders (drum kit, percussion) spans loud rock and acoustic tradition in his playing. He's made two instructional videos, released the trance drumming CDs Blue Buddha and Omaiyo, collaborates with Cuban singer Gloria "La Niña" Rivera, and has an alternate identity as one of the Darbuki Kings. This "fishin' musician" runs a solar-powered recording studio, has recorded with 3 Mustaphas 3 and accompanied singer/songwriter Greg Brown on two albums.

Dean Magraw (guitar) engages his experienced ears in the pursuit of soaring melodies, rhythmic momentum, and expansive harmonies, while squeezing sympathetic sonorities from the palette of uber-sensitive guitar strings in service to the unity of the BiL sound.

Todd Menton (vocals, guitar, mandolin, bodhran, whistle) joined BiL soon after their 1st LP, and is the lead singer on the classic albums From the Ladle to the Grave and Orb. In the early 1990s he left the band to play solo in Irish pubs. Todd has released two solo CDs on the New Folk label, and is working on his third.

Drew Miller (bass guitar, dulcimer) founded the band in 1983, and has been to all the gigs. His solid-body electric dulcimer adds mountain-inspired drones to the mix. Drew runs the Omnium label ("world music that rocks") and works as a graphic and web designer. He's also a member of Felonious Bosch.

David Stenshoel (fiddle, saxophone) enjoys playing many different styles, from "hot club" swing to Persian classical music. An original member of the band, he left in 1990 to raise his daughter; but returned seven years later, bringing his fiddle's lyrical voice to the melodies and the improv.

   About Boiled In Lead

"...a hard-driving blend of Irish folk, punk rock, and world music ...an explosive show..." -- The Onion (March 2005)

Boiled In Lead are innovators in bringing "folk music" kicking and screaming to rock audiences (and rock music to screaming folk audiences!) BiL's many instrumental dance tunes incorporate global influences, rhythms, and melodies that are guaranteed to keep the feet moving. Original songs stick in the mind long after the music is over.

The players improvise freely yet stay in sync, playing a vital mix of original and traditional material that sounds fresh and highly identifiable. Since their first gig at a punk rock bar on St. Paddy's Day 1983, the group and the individual musicians have won over 20 Minnesota Music Awards, and toured throughout the US and in Europe. The band's current lineup and new album SILVER sees the return of original lead singer Todd Menton and the addition of masterful guitarist Dean Magraw. Enthusiastic, powerful, playing a wealth of instruments, electric and acoustic, Boiled In Lead routinely blows away preconceptions about independent ways to rock.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace -

2 of 230, walkaboutsverse.741.com: WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

(C) David Franks 2003

76 of 230, walkaboutsverse.741.com: LAND RIGHTS

If there is a good thing
From the Second World War
It’s that most peoples learnt
To conquer lands no more.

In Africa, Asia,
And the Pacific, too:
Post-war independence -
Steps only bigots rue.

But for some indigenes,
Outnumbered much-too-much,
It has all come too late
For liberty, as such.

So ‘tis in Australia,
And America’s sites,
Where the best now, I think,
Is to respect land rights.

I'm loving "Silver." Usually when a band that's been around for at least 25 years release a new album, people say it's their best since their classic album. However, I think this is the best Boiled in Lead album, so far at least.

I heard about y'all years and years ago in an article in "Bass Player" magazine of all ridiculous places, but it's taken until the myspace age to finally hear your music. It was worth the wait. PS Did you know that Minneapolis and Seattle are the two most literate cities in the USA? I think it has something to do with being cooped up all winter. Peace~

Thanks for adding us. You really influenced our style. Most people might say otherwise, but what do you think made me, the guitarist in our duo, decide to play dulcimer, and where do you think we got the idea of doing loud acoustic music. We're planning on writing some softer stuff as well.

I don't normally do this kind of thing, but I'm in a mood to.

This is one of my favorite poems I read as a kid, by Robert Service, called "THE MEN WHO DON'T FIT IN".

Hope you like it.

There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.

If they just went straight they might go far,
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.

He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in.
