ESO LIVE @ McMenamins - "Intro and Intergalactic Battle Cruizer"
What started as a loosely formed local instrumental jazz-rock project has evolved into one of Bend’s most promising bands and one that’s at the forefront of instrumental innovation in the Northwest. Empty Space Orchestra hooked audiences over the past year with groove based instrumental but recently revamped its lineup - adding guitar to the already full sound - and with that change brought a different more challenging sound. Anchored by furious drumming of Lindsey Elias and the complex bass lines of Patrick Pearsall, Empty Space incorporates the precision of jazz into a largely rock sound. Although instrumental, the band is intensely melodic, thanks to the work of guitarist Shane Thomas and keyboard mastery of Keith O’Dell. The sound is often tough to categorize but hasn’t been hard to market here in central Oregon, as evidenced by the band’s rapidly growing following. "A lot of times people think they need to follow a set of rules to get people to like them. But we just do what we want and people seem to like it," Thomas told The Source Weekly before the release of ESO’s new album Big Bang. Already working on material for a forthcoming follow up to that album, Empty Space’s recent tracks offer an even more complex approach to instrumental fusion than their debut effort and should even further the band’s appeal. Bio by Mike Bookey - The Source Weekly
"...they’re really, really, really good at what they do, which is build epic, bruising rock jams that sound like they were shipped overnight from Jupiter."
"Together, they’re a living, breathing beast of a band that seems like it’s on the verge of something great." Ben Salmon - Frequency Blog/GO! Magazine
"This is the sound track space scope narrative that fits at least one of your memorable REM stints in wonderland" Jason Graham a.k.a. Mosley Wotta
"ESO hangs its hat on spandex-tight numbers that are remarkably scripted with each change meticulously crafted and locked into the band’s collective memory." Mike Bookey - The Source Weekly
