I spend most of my time writing, talking with writers, and did I mention writing...
Another interest I have in life is the philosophy of "Paying It Forward." So with that idea in mind, I'm using this space to highlight the work or activities of interesting, talented and wonderful people. I hope you enjoy it!
I spent the first half of my life as a musician, so I love music of all kinds - I was trained as a classical musician but I have a real fondness for a wide variety of World Music, including African, Celtic, Asian, Bluegrass.... Traditional jazz is always delicious, and of course, I was raised on ROCK N ROLL!
Movies
I love movies almost as much as I love writing and books! I especially enjoy indie films from the UK, but my favorite movie genre is sci-fi. Few things make me happier than a great movie!
Television
Considering all the channels, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to watch on TV these days (good thing, or I'd waste WAY too much time in front of the tube), but I do enjoy The Daily Show, NOW, Doctor Who, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood, Eureka, LOST, Extras and Northern Exposure (love those reruns).
Books
I read mostly sci-fi, horror and fantasy with a few mainstream and literary titles thrown in for good measure. I love books...the look, the feel, the smell of them...YUMM.
Fran Friel - Writer has lost her mind and will be gone for a while to see if she can find it. Send maps...and food. Posted at 5:37 PM Mar 21, 2008 view more
FRAN FRIEL is a Bram Stoker nominated author living in rural New England with her husband and their band of animal masters. She spends quality time with said hubby pretending they live in Maui. Residing in Connecticut, this pretending requires a vivid imagination, which brings us back to the writing.
In 2005, Fran joined The Horror Library as a fiction contributor, weekly columnist and blog wrangler for the The HL Blog-O-Rama. Her debut novella, MAMA'S BOY, was sold-out by Insidious Publications, Summer 2006, and nominated for a Bram Stoker Award in Long Fiction. Also, you'll find Fran's "Bad Music" in the anthology, TINY TERRORS 2 from UK publisher, Hadesgate Publications.
"If one advances in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." -Thoreau
**Fran is the Featured Author for August at Horror World! Read her story, "Bessie Green's Thumb"--it's FREE through the end of the month.(No longer available, but tentatively will return next year in a Horror World 2008 story anthology. I'll keep you posted.)
**Fran's collection, MAMA'S BOY & OTHER DARK TALES, is available at Apex Book Company. This 14 story collection is available in signed and numbered limited edition hardcover and trade paperback (100 copies only). It includes the Bram Stoker nominated novella, MAMA'S BOY plus short fiction and three additional novellas written expressly for the collection.
**The birth of the first anthology created by the dark authors of The Horror Library. Count 'em - thirty wicked stories, including my own Wings with Hot Sauce, are waiting to test your nerve and tickle your spine.
Who I'd like to meet: I would like to meet all the folks I know so well online, but whom I've never had the pleasure of meeting in person. I want to thank them for their amazing friendship and support.
As a winter present for everyone, I'm offering a free novella on my website.
A Happily Ever After of Her Own
Melinda Lightfoot, a preschool teacher with an unusual ability to flit in and out of fairy tales, never thought she would get into trouble...
...until the Fairy Tale Police arrest her while she is in Beauty and the Beast. They offer her a deal: Find Beauty, who left the story when Melinda trespassed into it, or be charged with the ultimate crime -- Fairy Tale Killer. If that's not bad enough the Beast tags along in search of his true love, and Melinda starts falling for the fairy tale prince. She must choose between doing the right thing and having her own happily ever after.
“The writer William Burroughs once called language “a virus from outer space”, and there’s a sense of that in A History of Sarcasm, where Burton holds words up to the sun and lets the light shine through them.”

"In the vein of Solaris, K-PAX
and The Man Who Fell to Earth,
PROXIMA is a refreshing film full of wonder."
(LONDON SCI-FI FESTIVAL)
"If you’re looking for something different
in science fiction from your traditional lasers
and alien monsters, check out
Carlos Atanes’s PROXIMA.
Remember Proxima is not just a place,
it’s a state of mind… literally."
(NIC BROWN, B MOVIE MAN)
"PROXIMA is an endearingly off-beat sci-fi film
whose odder moments owe to the visionary
can-do determination of Spanish
underground director Carlos Atanes."

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my new erotic horror novel THE 13TH is now in stores everywhere! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride!
There's even a website devoted just to the book, with an interactive map of the places and characters at www.the13th-horror.com.
Edward Lee called THE 13TH "A double-barreled shotgun blast of macabre entertainment -- an expert amalgamation of grotesquerie, eroticism, mystery, and pitch-black occult horror that no fan of the genre can miss."
And Gary A. Braunbeck said, "John Everson's The 13th is the first out-and-out horror novel in a long while to actually scare the **** out of me while reading it. It's stylish, extremely well-written, filled with richly-drawn characterizations, and boasts a labyrinthine plot worthy of Umberto Eco. Trust me -- this one will fry your nerves and break your heart."
