Over the last 10 years Functional Records has gone from a small label to one of the world’s leading purveyors of breakbeat funk. Delivering a selection of cuts from talented local artists, Beatz & Bobz residents and some of the biggest players on the scene.
It's taken nearly 6 months to come together and on the 15th May Functional completed the signing of the mighty Überzone for the release of his new album “Ideology” and singles for the UK and Europe! The first release, FB051, will be the double A side ‘Satisfaction’ with the flip ‘FUBAR’ released on July 2nd 2007 on vinyl and digital. This will be accompanied by some digital only mixes of Satisfaction. Uberzone will also be releasing his back catalogue digitally during the summer. There will be a second single released with mixes to coincide with the album release in September.
CAT NO: FB059 ARTIST : Quest and Mutiny
TITLE : A."Stick up Kid " AA. "One Big Rhyme "
GENRE : Breakbeat / Dubstep
RELEASE: June 2009
Quest and Mutiny need very little introduction, both of them being veterans of the breaks scene, with well over 100 tunes released between them. Having made their names as early pioneers of the bassline sound, Quest (Marcus) and Mutiny (Carlos) have both been exploring new territories recently, with Quest developing a distinctive sound bridging the gap between tearout and tech-step, and Mutiny experimenting with a more soulful "dare we say 'liquid'" sound. Now, after several years of running labels, club nights and websites together, these two West London breaks headz have finally got together in the studio to put the breakbeat back into breaks!
There comes a time in a producer's life when they really should stand back, objectively assess their moderately successful but ultimately unrewarding career, and get themselves a real job. You couldn't hope for much better examples of this than West London breaks veterans Quest and Mutiny. With well over a hundred releases between them, you'd think they'd simply call it a day and get down the job centre
But no. Grumpy old gits that they are, they've taken it upon themselves to "teach the youth a thing or two". The youth, of course, are far too busy broadcasting sexy soulful R'n'B from their mobile phones to notice the inane ramblings of the likes of old Questy and Mutinski. However, it would take more than wide public ignominy to stop these two breaks soldiers from recklessly bombarding the scene with their "sounds from the old school". Luckily for us, a curious twist of fate has brought forth an uncommonly excellent pair of tunes. Eastern Bollywood flavours and ‘Stick Up Kid’ sample from Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel’s ‘White Lines’ stutters through fat ass wobble-athon bass and Boom Ka, breakstep beats showcasing Mutiny’s musicality and Quest’s propensity for low frequency bass mangling. Flip for the solid funk breaks roller, tough but with its groove thang fully in tact.
BLUE EFFECT 'STOP'
CAT NO: FB058 ARTIST : Blue Effect TITLE : A."Stop" AA. "Stop" Ben & Lex Mix GENRE : Dubstep / Breakbeat
RELEASE: 2nd March 2009
Blue Effect was born and raised by hippies, beatniks, feminists, anarchists, protesters, animial liberators and "musicians" in the late 70's and early 80's in Devon. He got the music production bug at the age of 13 whilst living in leeds with his trusty Commodore Amiga, a sampler and a pile of early hardcore records for company.
Back in Devon a few years later, Blue Effect hooked up with Phil Licinio, Lewis Hopkin and DJ Andromeda, and set up a studio with the help of the legendary Tom Middleton. This was a very productive time which saw a number of singles and remixes on Paper, Eastern Block, Airgap, Functional Breaks, and Danny McMillan's Inflight Entertainment.
Tracks were licensed to compilations by Tom Middleton (Sound Of The Cosmos), Danny McMillan (High Altitude Breaks), Ashley Casselle (Deviations) and Stanton Warriors (Stanton Sessions) amongst others. The sound was deep house, breaks, and an early deep 2-step/proto dubstep. Now based in sheffield, Dubstep is Blue Effect‘s main love, also stating Grime for fun (having a soft spot for MC's) and Bassline also being a heavy influence.
This release also provides a mix from Ben and Lex, who have been part of the Functional family since their first release Costa Nostra back in 2003. Their second release for the label followed soon after, a double ‘A’ sided single Proper Tasty / Reconsidered which firmly stamped its mark on the breaks scene with radio plays on Radio One, Ministry of Sound, Breaks FM, plus several other international shows. With forthcoming releases on their own brand new label Ape Records (including remixes from Will White (Propellerheads), Transformer Man & more) and releases on Functional Breaks, Silo Records, Wut Eva and Jardim plus many remixes already lined up for the rest of this year, these two Westcountry Warriors look like they will be impossible to escape!

Now in their 15th year, Dreadzone have released five artist albums across a clutch of labels diverse as their music; from Creation to Functional, via Virgin. Their seminal 1995 album ‘Second Light‘ was cited by John Peel as one of his 10 favorite albums of all time.
Since forming in 1993, Dreadzone have toured the world over, DJed at countless clubs and festivals and even found time to squeeze in a top 20 hit in the form of ‘Little Britain’.
Founded by Greg alongside original bassmaster Leo Williams, the unmistakable MC Spee, and legendary reggae vocalist Earl 16; the trio more recently recruited Chris Compton on guitar and Chris Oldfield on technology and returned in 2007 to wow a series of festival crowds, including a mind-blowing performance at Glastonbury. Dreadzone were back.
Latest single ‘Love The Life’ first started doing the rounds in November, whilst the band toured the UK and Europe in support, selling out many of the venues along the way. Men of the moment Ctrl-Z heard the track and decided it was the perfect opportunity to honour a long-term commitment to turn their remixing hand to a Dreadzone track. The result being a stormer of a re-rub, with the added vocal talents of legendary MC Tenor Fly.
Manchester’s Unbalanced Jack - Rob Groves aka Master Grooves (Altered States) and Chris Pope aka Cheeky Munky (Sourpuss) - drive things in a dubstep direction on the flipside. Their fresh approach to breaks throws elements of jungle, as well as dubstep, into the mix, and has helped establish them as two of the top producers and DJs in the scene.
Fast forward to spring 2008, the remixes are done and ready for a full release, due to popular demand. The Dreadzone band is also preparing to go out on the road for the aptly titled ‘Love The Life Tour Part 2 - The Remix’
This saturday the crew of youth club KRAK (Avelgem - BE) comes up with another groovy edition of 'TheBrothersGonnaWorkItOut'. Let's groove on Soda'n'Suds, Grapes! ft. Flip Kowlier LIVE, DJ ROM1 aka Mr Explicit and many more!
This wicked party is taking place at the community center of Avelgem (Belgium), on the border of East- and West-Flanders and Hainaut.
