Jimmy started DJing in the early ‘90s and in 1995 he created a club called Mofo @ The Borderline just off Charing Cross Road, London. It was a weekly Tuesday night event that attracted a mixed bag of skaters and breakers dancing to Big Beat, hip-hop, jungle and skate punk. As the club evolved, Mofo moved more towards dance music and eventually became one of the first breakbeat clubs to emerge out of the UK. But as student loans turned to student grants and superclubs like Fabric & Home dominated the London clubbing scene, mid week parties became harder to fill and so Jimmy’s Mofo's night ceased. **************************************************************
Then Jimmy (who hates a conventional lifestyle) wanted to get involved somewhere else in the scene and so he sought out a new project, launching Mofo Magazine in January 2000. Mofo became the seminal breakbeat magazine and the portal for clubbers and DJs wishing to discover breaks. The magazine had an underground, independent vibe and featured amazing artwork on the cover with a mixed CD. ************************************************************** Out of the magazine grew the label Mofo Recordings. Since it’s formation in 2004, Mofo has established itself as one of the most prolific UK breakbeat labels with consistent top 5 positions in all the sellers’ web-based charts. Jimmy describes the label as being eclectic in style; dropping tech-funk to jump-up block party breaks with a hip-hop edge and urban electro breaks on a Ragga tip. The styles may be different but the attitude has to be party. Mofo went on to be nominated for breakthrough label at the International Breakbeat Awards 2006. ************************************************************** Whilst running Mofo Recordings, Jimmy has sustained a constant DJ schedule and has upheld long-term residencies at Torture Garden (9 years) and Raindance (7 years). Since 2006, he has also been playing around the UK and Europe as of one half of Beat Assassins (Mofo Recordings’ flagship artist). Beat Assassins is the DJ/production partnership between Wooz and Jimmy Mofo, who deliver a new territory in breakbeat music called “urban electro” that brings together breakbeat, electro and dancehall, producing an exciting and individual sound for Beat Assassins.
