Two voices ring out. Rich and resonant, they weave and dance, creating an intricate web of melody and counter-melody that hangs in the air long after the last ringing tones have faded. Krishna (vocals, piano) and Lórien (vocals, guitar) are the voices of She Flies, one of San Diego's newest up-and-coming Alternative / Acoustic Rock bands.
Lórien and Krishna met in August of 2007 and the two girls, both second-generation career musicians, formed an instant bond, both musically and personally. Within a week, both women had decided to give up their solo careers and follow in the footsteps of the great songwriting teams they both idolized: Lennon & McCartney, Hall & Oates, Simon & Garfunkel. Quickly earning a reputation for solid, memorable songwriting, soaring harmonies and powerful vocals, their newly formed band, She Flies, began appearing on stages and at parties and events around San Diego, building a fan base of thousands in a matter of months.
Krishna and Lórien style themselves as "the New Hippies" and describe their music as "Shamanic Rock," referencing ancient musical and spiritual traditions from around the world. Amid an eclectic mix of prophecy, mysticism and good old rock 'n roll, She Flies proudly pursues an "agenda" of World Peace and Social Justice through music.
She Flies is currently preparing to release their first live album in July of this year, and to appear before an audience of over 50,000 at San Diego Pride's "Rally in the Park." For an updated schedule of shows, please visit She Flies' website at: www.myspace.com/sheflies
Krishna (Alexandra Grill) grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, the oldest of three children in a family of professional musicians. Her mother, Aileen Sander, a singer/songwriter from New York, and her father, Pierre Grill, a jazz pianist and record producer from southern France, together ran Rendez-Vous Recording, one of the top studios in the South Pacific.
Krishna first appeared on a professional recording at three years old, and by the time she was thirteen, she was a professional in-house studio musician, appearing on over 50 recordings, including three platinum records (Voyage, A Winter's Journey, and Isle of Dreams [Sugo Records]).
In addition to studio work, Krishna played a prominent role in Hawaii's musical theatre scene, and was part of many highly successful musical projects. Most notably, she, together with local singer Isaac Calpito, represented Hawaii and the United States in the 1996 Polynesian Music Festival, earning the event's highest awards and honors.
In 1998, Krishna left Hawaii to attend the illustrious Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California as an opera major. Since then, she has released two albums: Sof Ma'arav L'Dor V'Dor, a collaboration with her mother featuring traditional Jewish music from around the world, and Possessed, the sole release from her former band, The Dervishes, an innovative world-rock project undertaken with singer Ellen Stavash.
In addition to writing music and performing with She Flies, Krishna enjoys painting and occasionally dressing up in weird clothes to play with her friends in the SCA.
Lórien (Fawn Lórien Patton) was born in San Diego, California, and raised on the road by touring musicians Jim and Dee Patton, multi-gold-record artists, and innovators in the field of children's music.
Introduced to the stage at the tender age of three, Lórien was driven by the need to create her own music. At thirteen, her father bought her a guitar, a white Special Edition Takamine, and she threw herself into learning how to play. Before long Lórien had begun to explore the world of songwriting, and from there it seemed her path was set. At 17, Lórien left home and moved to L.A. to pursue her musical dreams.
In 1991, together with fellow singer-songwriters Eben Brooks, Allison Lonsdale, and Enrique Acosta, Lórien helped found the highly successful folk band "The Wild Oats" with whom she toured and recorded for a year before making the difficult decision to move on an pursue a solo career.
In 1997, while working as a security guard on the NBC lot, Lórien sold a song to NBC's original movie "Her Last Chance." In the weeks that followed, amid a strange flurry of press about NBC's "singing security guard," Lórien appeared on the Today Show with Katie Couric, Geraldo, Sally Jesse Raphael, and even had a walk-on interview with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show.
Since then, Lórien has performed at L.A. hotspots including Ghengis Cohen, Molly Malone's and Rusty's On the Pier, and released two solo, all-original, self-produced albums: Quest, in 1998, and Waterline, in 2000. She is thrilled to be back in her hometown, performing in San Diego after all these years.
When she is not performing with She Flies, Lórien spends her time painting, world-building, and entrenched in her quirky musical side project, "Dangerous When Bored," an experiment in loop-based composition which she offers free to the public.
"On this Christmas Day, i only have one thing to say: When i heard you two sing, my heart felt like it had wings. Your words lifted my soul, but of course... that was your goal"
I hope you two have a very blessed Christams.... Hope to see or sing with you soon. Sarah
THE BLIND TIME They start the engines at the end of the day With that rumble squeezing the silence the rain doesn't sound the same anymore just take off lights They leave at the darkest time at the blind time as blind as they are
L’ORA CIECA Accendono i motori sul finire del giorno Con quel rombo che schiaccia il silenzio La pioggia non ha più il suo suono Solo le luci del decollo Partono nell’ora più buia Nell’ora cieca Come ciechi sono loro
WOLF WOMAN Crossed by a wave out of control and Queen severe she drives blindly the track which has been assigned to her noisy at times , at times shaded transparent and invisible she emerges or hides herself suggests or asserts the story she'll tell Squeezed by the flowing she turns and glides on the see which covers fake footprints. Counting the bones in a gathering or deprived of the pack she hunts shrewd Even exiled she boils again in new water beyond the See and the Sun beyond the earth and the forest beyond words She surfaces
