With songs born in the desert and shaped in the city, Tecoma’s sound defies easy categorisation. Tecoma seamlessly combines styles as jarring and disparate as country, jazz and roots music, with drum n bass rhythms, spaghetti western themes and sampled beats. Labelled everything from ‘post trip-hop’ (Rolling Stone) to ‘alternative roots music’, at the heart of Tecoma’s sound is a deeply compelling song writing talent and an utterly distinctive voice. Once heard this music stays with you.
Amira Pyliotis, the musician behind the moniker Tecoma, first discovered performance on trumpet at age 11 after falling in love with Louis Armstrong. Growing up in Melbourne, Amira performed in any number of lo-fi, jazz, blues, roots and rock outfits, before a move to the desert of Central Australia prompted her to focus her attention on her new solo incarnation, Tecoma.
In the past 3 years Tecoma has been busy, writing and building a stronghold of fans across the country and beyond through solid touring and the independent releases of the ‘City Folk EP’ and ‘Air to me’ singles. Along the way Tecoma has picked up awards in song writing from the nations peak industry body representing songwriters, APRA; she’s received coveted rotation from radio Triple J and recording offers from major and independent labels alike. On the live front Tecoma has given stand out performances at many of the nations top festivals and shared the stage with many of the countries most successful music acts, including Ben Lee, Sarah Blasko, Lior and End of Fashion.
Over that time her sound has evolved and developed to the point where Tecoma stands poised to release her much anticipated debut album, titled ‘Home Brew’ in 2008. Home Brew stands at once, as a complete opus from start to finish, and also as a document of Tecoma’s journey from solo performer to band leader, with tracks featuring her current touring line-up of drums and double bass. While the songs and Tecoma’s voice remain the lynch pin on which the success and strength of this record is hinged, the album includes many stand-out performances by guest musicians, Tecoma’s friends captured on the road in make-shift recording studios as far a field as Yackandandah, Darwin and Byron Bay.
With songs penned by an individual spirit, this is music to take you from the highway, to the kitchen, to the dance floor and back again. Drive to it, dance to it and enjoy losing yourself in the sounds of Tecoma.
